Article from Leidsch Dagblad

The visit of Crown Princess Victoria is announced in the regional newspaper of Leyden (South Holland), the Leidsch Dagblad. Here is the link to the article.

Translation in English:

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden opens De Keukenhof

LISSE - Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will open the 58th season of De Keukenhof. In this season the flowerpark in Lisse will be dedicated to the famous Swedish physicist and botanicus Linnaeus. Still all tulips are baptized and classified according to a scheme developed by Linnaeus in the 18th century.

Crown Princess Victoria will perform the opening on the first day of Spring, Wednesday March 21st. De Keukenhof will be opened for the public from March 22nd until May 20th.

In the park the Swedish theme will be recognizable in various ways. The colours blue and yellow will be prominent and there are various expositions in the pavillions. A few months ago pupils from primary schools planted bulbs which will blossom and result in an enormous portrait of Pippi Långstrump, the main character in lots of books by the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren.

Crown Princess Victoria Ingrid Alice Desirée (14 Juli 1977) is the Duchess of Västergötland and the eldest daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. She bears the title of Crown Princess since 1 January 1980, when the law was changed in favour of equal succession.

Today the princess is here in the Netherlands to open the Keukenhof in Lisse!!:D The main topic is the Dutch-Swedish relationship, and there is a mosaic work of pippi langkous (the dutch name for Pippi Langstrump) There are some Swedish magazines that have decorated some gardens in the keukenhof, and there is much more. Tonight i will look if there are some pictures of even a video of CP Victoria opening the Keukenhof.

well, i see the work is already done for me :p the man who joins her in the pictures is our prime minister Jan-Peter Balkenende, also know as Harry Potter LoL.. i think Victoria looks great in that coat.. and she looks really happy. i wonder if she visited CP Willem-Alexander and princess Maxima.. they are good friends.

Love it love it love it!

Bravo Crown Princess Victoria! I love the coat, the scarf and her hair, she looks great! Very impresive. :)

The coat, the scarf and her hair?

No word about her charm, the lovely way she handled the 'ruined' opening, the visibly good interaction with the prime minister and the public?

The prime minister usually doesn't escort foreign royalty in The Netherlands, if I am not mistaken (apart from wreath laying and other more official things). But nice to see him there.

The Crownprincess seems an utterly charming lady and luckily the weather wasn't to bad this morning either.

Yes her charm and interaction with people is more important than the way she looks but I was merely pointing out how stunning Crown Princess Victoria looks giving the fact she is normally talked about with people saying that she does not make such a huge effort.

Strange indeed.

Of course the premier is involved by formal state events but the opening of a flower park? Princess Máxima, Princess Mabel or Princess Laurentien could have escorted the Princess, in my humble opinion.

But the fact that the premier apparently was requested to escort the future head-of-state of Sweden, is a sign of respect as well, of course. On the news the Crown Princess and the premier went very well, all laughing and small-talk together. Premier Balkenende and Crown Princess Victoria will have met each other for the first time 2004 (baptism of Princess Catharina-Amalia).

Victoria looks so beautiful it´s really nice to see her:flowers:

Victoria looks lovely! Love the hair, it's a very grown up style for her. But she is almost 30.;) Thanks for all the pics everyone!

Also I have a question about what Keukenhof translates to in english? I heard on a travel show filmed in Amsterdam that Keukenhof is kitchen. If that's true then could someone explain this event to me better. :flowers: I'm not seeing the connection.

Yes, the 'Kitchen Courtyard'

Lady Jacoba, Duchess of Bavaria, Countess of Holland, Zealand and Hainaut (1401-1436) lived nearby on Teylingen Castle and used this large park not only for the flower decorations of her residence but also for the providing of (medicinal and culinar) herbs, vegetables and fruit. It was known as the 'Kitchen Courtyard', working for Lady Jacoba's gigantic Household.

In the centuries the park evolved into a renowned flower park but the name 'Keukenhof' ('Kitchen Courtyard') remained the same.

What happened there?

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden has opened the 58th season of De Keukenhof ('Kitchen's Courtyard', once delivering flowers, vegetables, fruits and herbs to the Court). In this season the flowerpark in Lisse is dedicated to the famous Swedish physicist and botanicus Linnaeus. Still all tulips are baptized and classified according to a scheme developed by Linnaeus in the 18th century. Crown Princess Victoria has performed the opening today, on the first day of Spring.

Oops! Crown Princess Victoria tumbles the pillar down!

Hilarity!

The pillar with the green push-button is straight up again.

The Crown Princess poses for a fantastic photo.

The Crown Princess heads for The Hague, to have lunch with her godmother Queen Beatrix and Princess Máxima. Maybe she will see her godchild Princess Catharina-Amalia as well.

Netherlands premier: "The Crown Princess is a wonderful lady"

During the visit at the Keukenhof, the Netherlands premier, prof. dr. Jan-Peter Balkenende was asked about Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden: "I have had the pleasure to meet the Crown Princess for the first time in 2004 [baptism of her godchild Princess Catharina-Amalia] and she is a wonderful lady. She is very cordial. It is always a honour when the Crown Princess of Sweden brings a visit to our country. It is known that the Crown Princess maintains a very close and dear relationship with our royal family. Yes, I'm honoured that I may receive and escort her today".

Makes me wonder, how the relationship between the PM and the dutch Royal Family generally is? He is talking so positively about them...I don´t think, that one would see this in Sweden. At least not in the many years with a socialdemocratic government. The RF and Göran Persson surely got along, but real love, it wasn´t (or didn´t seem)

And thank you for the video...it is looking, as if the Keukenhof ppl have a wicked sense of humour and even encouraged her to touch the pole at the side, so that it would fell down. And she did it with so much power, that one could think, it was on purpose. And actually both got, what they wanted and needed. The Keukenhof some attention and Victoria some headlines ;)
Of course it could also be, that she simply has this power. If you are looking at her cervical veins...this would make every bodybuilder jealous ;)

The relationship of Queen Beatrix with her premiers was (is) quite good. It are durable relationships. Queen Beatrix came on the throne in 1980 and she has only appointed three premiers in all those 27 years. The premier always helds a speech on the Queen's birthday, on births and on deaths and personifies the 'attachment' of the people to the Royal House. Every premier has done it in warm words, stressing the bond between Netherlands and Orange, the devotion to the Queen, etc.

Does the Swedish PM that as well?

Here a picture of Queen Beatrix and dog Miss Pepper receiving the Swedish PM Carlsson in a private and informal audience at Huis ten Bosch (the audience itself in the Queen's study is never pictured).
Click on the picture to blow it up.

Actually Lena, it's rather the opposite. Maybe it was not love, but Göran Persson, who was our Prime Minister for over ten years, was rather fond of King Carl Gustaf and among the establishment he was one of his strongest defenders.

For example during the Brunei scandal, Persson publicly defended the King in his statements and at a press conference, and during the recently televised documentary series on his period at PM, there is an episode were he talks about how missunderstood the King was then, that it's important to stand behind the compromiss that created our current monarchist system as a public leader and how much the Royal Family does for Sweden.

Among political circles, it's a well known fact that Göran rather likes the King and over the years he came to also like the monarchy. And every time someone asked him why he or anyone in the Government did not proceed the requirement of a republic that is in the party programme, he answered that it's a non-issue.
