Spanish Royals Present the Award to the Exemplary Town of Asturias 2021
Saturday October 23, Their Majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia, along with the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofia, paid a visit to Santa María del Puerto (Somiedo). The town won this years award of Exemplary Town of Asturias for “embodying the model of mountain town that has known how to adapt to the new times.”
Upon their arrival they were received by local autorities and greeted the people who gathered up to meet them.
Following the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the King and the Princess of Asturias, the Royals visited a woodcraft workshop.
Then the Royal Couple and the Princesses visited the Somiedo Natural Park, accompanied by its director, Luis Fernando Alonso, and signed the Book of Honor.
In the Calecha area of the town took place the presentation of the award. In his speech the King praised the attidute and the character of the residents of Santa María del Puerto. The Princess of Asturias, in her speech, thanked the residents for their warm welcome and also praised them for “managing to conserve the protected and privileged landscape that surrounds you in order to continue living in a mountain town”.
The Exemplary Town of Asturias award is presented every year to the Asturian town that has been determined to be the best in “defence and conservation of the natural environment, historical heritage and culture, or in carrying out community works of outstanding solidarity”.
