The St Thomas Cathedral, a new Syriac Orthodox Church, was today consecrated in West London with Prince Charles in attendance.

He joined 600 worshipers – including the Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church – for the consecration service led by Archbishop Mor Athanasius Toma Dawod Dakkama, the United Kingdom’s Archbishop of the Syriac Orthodox Church.

In a speech he delivered during the service, Prince Charles said he found it “deeply encouraging” that even though the Church’s members in the Middle East are persecuted for their religion, the Syriac Church has been “able to expand and gain in strength” in Britain. He also reminded the congregation that, while places of worship are beautiful and serve a purpose, “the highest and ultimate temple of God is the human person” and encouraged everyone to “rededicate to our Lord the inner temple that is our own true self.”

Following the consecration, the Prince took part in some cultural dancing outside alongside women dressed in traditional costumes.
