Birthday Concert for Luxembourg’s Former Grand Duke Jean
Luxembourg’s former head of state, Grand Duke Jean, has celebrated his 95th birthday with a concert at the Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte Concert Hall tonight.
The Grand Duke – whose actual birthday is on January 5 – was joined by his entire immediate family, as well as relatives and close friends from other royal houses (King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Sofia of Spain, Prince El Hassan and Princess Sarvath of Jordan, King Constantine II, Queen Anne-Marie and Princess Irene of Greece, as well as several descendants of Grand Duke Jean’s sisters) for the concert performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg.
As at the concert for his 90th birthday in 2011, five of Jean’s grandchildren (one from each of his children) gave a small reading, before Happy Birthday was sung by all and a lavish birthday cake brought out for the former Grand Duke to cut into.
Ahead of arriving at the Concert Hall, group photographs were taken at the Grand Ducal Palace.
