Spain’s former King, Juan Carlos I, has given an interview to journalist Carlos Herrera for his new radio program, Herrera en COPE, in which he praised the efforts of his son, King Felipe VI.

“We have a great King with very many good qualities,” King Juan Carlos said of his son, stating that he was “very proud, excited and above all very pleased” to see how the change in reign has worked out, fifteen months on.

He did mention how “as a father, it’s not easy, because obviously I’m biased” when people asked him of his opinions on the new King, but the 77-year-old had nothing but good things to say: “After just a year, he [King Felipe] has won the appreciation and respect of the Spanish society.”

The former monarch also touched on his own life following his abdication in June 2014, saying he feels “very well” and his health is good. “I also have more time to see and meet fiends that before I couldn’t see so much,” King Juan Carlos also commented, before reaffirming that he would “help and work for Spain every time the King asks me to do so” as it would be an “honour and pleasure”.
