The Prince of Orange has spoken at the 5th World Water Forum. The forum began on Monday, March 16th, when a summit meeting for heads of state was held at Istanbul’s Ciragan Palace.

The Forum is held every three years, and this year’s key themes are sanitation, climate change and increasing demand for water. Prince Willem-Alexander is the Chairman of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Advisory Board for Water and Sanitation. It was in this capacity that he spoke earlier today at the Forum, calling on developed nations to give money so that the Millenium Development Goals set in 2000 can still be achieved by 2015. Willem-Alexander said that in the midst of the world-wide financial crisis, governments and leaders must find the political will to help the poorest people in the world and help to provide them with clean drinking water and better sanitation facilities.

The Forum will end on March 22nd.

The Prince’s full speech (in English) can be read here.
