In the past week, Prince Albert II of Monaco visited both India and China. On Sunday, the 3rd of October, the Sovereign joined Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, for the opening ceremony of the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games. Well-known for his love of sports, Prince Albert is, many-times-over, an Olympic athlete and, besides this, he is a member of the International Olympic Committee. He is also President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee. In fulfilling these roles, he is ever a tireless advocate of the use of sports in diplomacy.

On Monday, the 4th of October, His Serene Highness met with Mr. Singh for a discussion on how to improve the bilateral relations between Monaco and India.

Later in the week, he paid a visit to China. In order to promote the World Fair, he attended a performance of “La Belle” by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. On Thursday, he attended an imitation of the National Day of Monaco, and finally on Friday, he and his sister, Princess Stephanie, were the hosts of a gala performance organized by the International Circus Festival of Monte-Carlo.

Prince Albert returned to Monaco in time for the weekend gala to benefit the Princess Grace Foundation and the Irish Fund. Ms. Charlene Wittstock, his fiancee, joined him at Monte-Carlo’s Hotel de Paris for the evening gala. Mary Robinson, who was elected the first female president of the Republic of Ireland in 1990, was among the distinguished guests. Prince Albert proudly paid homage to the color of the Leprechauns by pinning a green bow tie to his tuxedo. For her part, Ms. Wittstock, who is set to become a Princess of Monaco next summer, opted for a simple black dress and an oversized tuxedo jacket.
