Princess Madeleine, Chris O'Neill & Family, General News Part 4,February 2021

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
It seems that Madeleine and family come to Sweden for the National Day.
Margareta Thorgren to Svensk Damtidning:
- Yes, as planned, the family will come home for National Day. It is a very special national day in 2023 and it is planned that they will come home in the month of June. I don't know how long they will stay, due to the move in August.
However, it is unclear whether Madeleine and Chris will attend Victoria's birthday on July 14.
- I can leave that unsaid, but now it is the National Day that they plan to be able to attend. According to tradition, they are usually here in the month of July, but there may be some changes this year due to the move.

I thought the family was planning a permanent move back to Sweden?

I thought the family was planning a permanent move back to Sweden?

They are, which is the reason that it's unclear if they will be here in Sweden i July. I assume that they will be here in June for a visit (an perhaps bring some things with them), go back to Florida in July, and then make the permanent move i August, before school starts.

I thought the family was planning a permanent move back to Sweden?

The Swedish version of the announcement of the move labeled it as "tills vidare" (for the time being, temporarily) whereas the English version designated it as "indefinitely" and "permanent".

https://www.kungahuset.se/arkiv/pre...san-madeleine-med-familj-flyttar-till-sverige
https://www.kungahuset.se/english/a...madeleine-relocates-to-sweden-with-her-family

My guess is that, as with all of their previous moves, the couple are either undecided or of different minds about whether the move will be temporary or permanent.

The phrase "tills vidare" sort of means "permanent" in Swedish. One example:

I have a permanent job. It's called "Tills vidare-anställning". That implies that my job is permanent unless something unexpected happens (perhaps company goes bankrupt or I quit). So when it comes to their move, I interpret "tills vidare" to mean that they are staying in Sweden an have no plans to move elsewhere, but of course you never know what might happen in the future.

Margareta Thorgren confirmed to Svensk Damtidning that Madeleine and her family have arrived to Sweden. They will be in Sweden now and for some time to come. Madeleine and Chris attend the National Day festivities at Skansen tomorrow evening.
What does it mean for the king that Princess Madeleine is there?
- This year 2023 is special, tomorrow on National Day, Sweden turns 500 years old. So it's nice that the entire royal family is there to celebrate our and Sweden's national day a year like this. It was on June 6 that Gustav Vasa was elected king, and that is why we celebrate Sweden's National Day on this particular date.
Will Princess Madeleine and Chris O'Neill's children also be at Skansen?
- Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar have been there before. But the other children will not be present, and at the festivities at the Nordic Museum in the evening, none of the children will participate. That event is too late at night for them.

Thank you for that explanation! I have seen "tills vidare" translated in relation to jobs as "temporary" or "acting", which English speakers would generally infer to mean that the process of replacing the jobholder is already underway, so it is good to learn that "tills vidare" can mean "permanent until something unexpected happens".

It seems as if "for the time being" or "indefinitely" are the best of the translation choices.

Below is a comparison of the announcement of the move to Miami with the announcement of the latest planned move to Sweden. I would be interested in opinions on how the wording compares.

UK/Sweden to USA, 2018:

"Prinsessan Madeleine och herr Christopher O'Neill bosätter sig i USA

Prinsessan Madeleine och herr Christopher O'Neill planerar att i höst flytta till Florida i USA för en tid framöver.

Tidpunkten och möjligheten att utgå från USA passar familjen bra då barnen fortfarande är i förskoleåldern."

https://www.kungahuset.se/arkiv/pre...ch-herr-christopher-oneill-bosatter-sig-i-usa

USA to Sweden, 2023:

"Prinsessan Madeleine med familj flyttar till Sverige

So when it comes to their move, I interpret "tills vidare" to mean that they are staying in Sweden an have no plans to move elsewhere, but of course you never know what might happen in the future.

Judging from the couple and the court's comments, I have the impression that their various moves to Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States have always been made without definite plans to eventually move elsewhere but also without definite plans to stay permanently.

Madeleine celebrates today her 41st birthday. She celebrates her birthday with her family. The photo of her is by Joel Silva/Childhood, taken in November 2022.

This might be better in another thread but not sure which. Victoria has a property from the state to live in (as heir), Carl Philip has Bertil and Lilian's old house (and a few others it seems), is there an obvious property Madde and Chris and family may move to when they move back to Sweden? I assume they won't want to live full time in the Royal Mews apartment they have (but maybe they will and its bigger and more suitable to a family than I think)

The short answers are that no, besides the flat at the Mewd there is no obvious property for M & C to move into and yes, from what we know the flat is bigger & more suitable for a family than you think. It was renovated and enlarged a few years ago. That said, I'm sure that the family eventually will end up living in a house somewhere in or around Stockholm.

Expressen has called Staffan Larsson, the Governor of the Royal Palaces, about Villa Loviseberg (the former home of the king and queen's friends Hans Eric and Eva Benita Brodin) - who will be living there? It is a paywall article.

Although more than 1.5 years have passed since the purchase - one of the most expensive house sales of the year - question marks are piling up about who will actually live in the house.
Nya beskedet efter statens mystiska köp av Villa Loviseberg

Hänt Magazine quotes the article
A couple of months ago, Svensk Damtidning reported, according to information, that Madeleine and her family may eventually settle in Villa Loviseberg.
Something that is now denied by Staffan Larsson, Governor of the Royal Palaces. Madeleine and Chris O'Neill will not be moving into the villa.
- No they are not. It has never been an issue. We have not yet received any information about who will live there, says Staffan Larsson to Expressen.

Will Villa Loviseberg be the residence of the prime minister, when the prime minister's residence will be renovated, like the swedish press wrote in August 2022, we will see.

It didn't take long for the press to go after Chris. Stoppa pressarna, the really mean and bad web gossip magazine, has photos of Madeleine and Chris at a dinner at Sturehof restaurant. There are more articles about Chris and Madeleine at Stoppa pressarna, it's information is very often false.
Bildbeviset_ Chris O’Neill skämde ut sig på krog vid Stureplan _ Stoppa Pressarna

Is its statement that the Princess Family's Royal Mews apartment measures over 400 square meters backed up by more reliable sources? If so, that seems sufficient even for a royal family's residence and explains why they have not purchased a house, especially since there is still the possibility that the couple will leave Sweden once again a few years from now (or so I have the impression).

On a side note, how did Stoppa Pressarna morph from a site whose declared mission was to stop the (gossip) press by reprinting their articles for free into an unreliable gossip site in its own right?

Svensk Damtidning also noticed that the ad of Madeleine and Chris's house at the broker's website has been removed.
Has it been sold? Svensk Damtidning asked the court, which answers: As Princess Madeleine and Mr. Christopher O'Neill's residence in Florida is private, it is not something we comment on.
So the question hangs in the air. Have Madeleine and Chris simply removed the ad, or have they finally got the luxury villa sold?

Madeleine has given an interview to German Eltern Magazine.

Her children's book "Stella and the secret" is getting a lot of attention in Germany, where it has just been published.
In the interview she talks about the book, about her own children's favorite books and about her plans for a new children's book.
- I would like to write a book that encourages children to explore nature.

Johan Tegel, the Deputy Director of the Information Department, said to Svensk Damtidning that Madeleine and family celebrate Chris's birthday privately. Chris is a private person and Tegel has no further information to tell about the birthday.
SD asked if the family is still in Sweden and Tegel said that Madeleine's official activities appear in the calendar on the court's website. Otherwise, they have no information to tell about the family's travels.
In 2016 and 2017 the family celebrated Chris's birthday in Saint Tropez.

Expressen: Madeleine's and Chris's move is postponed
The director of the Information Department Margareta Thorgren confirms Expressen's information that the move will not happen at the end of August, which was originally the plan.
- The plan is for the family to move to Sweden, she says.
But will it take place according to what was communicated last spring, this autumn?
- It will be postponed until 2024, according to the information I have.
Is it because of questions connected to the Swedish Migration Agency?
- The reason is neither a migration issue, the house sale, nor anything like that. It is simply that the time for the family with all that a move entails, it has been a little too short.
Thorgren doesn't want to comment on what is taking the time, but confirms that Leonore, Nicolas and Adrienne will start their respective school and preschool semesters this fall in the United States.
Today is Chris's birthday. Thorgren doesn't want to comment on where they are celebrating, but says that they plan to spend the summer in Sweden.

So obviously this is why the house in Pinecrest has been taken away from the broker's listings.

And after this news, Svensk Damtidning's editor-in-chief Johan T Lindwall thinks that Chris refuses to move to Sweden.
Already in March, Lindwall raised a warning finger. Now he is convinced that it is Chris who refuses to move home to Sweden. The US was a place of refuge to escape all attention.
- I find it very difficult to see how Chris will acclimatise to Sweden and Stockholm. I know that he often used to complain about the attention his person generated when he was out and about in public areas. When Madeleine and Chris initially moved to the USA, it was to have a much more anonymous life than in Stockholm. Both Madeleine and Chris found it difficult every time they were out of their home in Östermalm and basically everyone turned around and looked with wide eyes. In Florida, they got away with it, Lindwall says.

Thanks Lady Finn and interesting - what could be the reason? Unlike normal families, they have all the help they want regarding every imaginable issue that comes up with recolation. Plus, they are no strangers to relocations in general.
I doubt they will uproot the children during terms, therefore there will be a longer delay.

Given that the couple had already completed the process of obtaining a residence permit for Mr. O'Neill (which, as discussed upthread, normally requires around a year's time), staged their home for sale and obtained places for the children at Swedish schools, and that Ms. Thorgren confirms nothing has gone awry with immigration or selling the home (thus, it was presumably the couple's choice to pull the listing), it is difficult to believe that it was necessary to postpone the move for an entire year purely because "with all that a move entails, [the time] has been a little too short."

The announcement calls to mind both the initial "postponement" of Princess Madeleine's wedding to Jonas Bergström in 2011 and Princess Madeleine enrolling her children at preschools in Sweden and the family spending increasingly long periods in Sweden in late 2017 to early 2018 only for the couple to announce a relocation to the United States out of the blue several months later.

I am afraid that given the information available, the explanation which seems to me most plausible is that in 2017-18 as well as 2023, the princess was eager to return to Sweden, her husband originally reluctantly assented but then withdrew his agreement, and the princess acquiesced to his wishes. Naturally, there are also other possibilities. But whatever the reason, there is almost certainly more to the changed plans than Ms. Thorgren has publicly disclosed.

These were my immediate thoughts upon the news. It seems to be ovious that Madeleine rather would live in Sweden and Chris not.
A very difficult issue for the couple IMO. Why didn't they stay in London? For Chris it seemed to be allright and Madeleine always had the chance to visit Sweden and her family. it was not a big distance and with the money they have she could have gone once a month.
The way of living, cultural differences, would also not be so different as life is in the US.
I hope for them that they are getting the problem solved so that they all can be content where and how they are spending their life.

The explanation makes no sense and if anything just seems a bit suspicious.
It just sucks for the kids. By the time they start school and begin to make friends they are uprooted and have to start all over again.

There were some quite intrusive photos of them eating at a restaurant taken from the table next to them doing the rounds on social media so I wouldn't be surprised if that put them off.

Somebody with only half a braincell will have acknowledged before taking a decision that moving to Sweden will increase the media presence and interest.
This can't be the reason. They've been there before (remember Chris giving the finger).

Well that's me told.

Personally I wonder if Chris wasn't keen in the first place and then something like happening may have been enough to push him over the edge.

The only other alternative I can think of is there is some work reason for Chris that makes it desirable to stay in the US.

of course its possible, but either he toughens up in that respect or he will stay away. if he has such a thin skin its better for the family to stay away. i would totally understand if this was the first try but its not, and this time school children are involved.
re work reasons, of course possible too but after this reason, others will pop up when you work internationally.
it makes no sense to make plans for the whole family knowing fully well from past experiences what this means and then to snap at first opportunity.

I agree with the others that the reason given is very unlikely to be the main reason. The only thing that might be congruent with it, is that the time was too short to sell their house. However, that was explicitly refuted and removing it from the listing, isn't going to help either to get it sold.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't a postponement but an abandonment of the idea altogether. I do mainly wonder about making it public for them to withdraw the plan (and not for the first time making these kinds of decisions).

Chris's friend and bestman, Swiss Cedric Notz started a relationship with Andrea Brodin in 2013, moved to Sweden in the beginning of 2016 and has started a business in Sweden in 2019. He speaks some Swedish. He is also still involved in companies in Switzerland and Azerbaijan and his mother lives in Switzerland. Cedric can tell Chris about how to combine working in international business to living in Sweden, surely Chris has spoken with Cedric about this.

Given the unnecessarily nasty coverage Chris always gets in the Swedish press, I am not surprised he doesn't want to live there.

When Chris and Madeleine married I had no idea things would get so complicated.

I bet they didn't either.:ermm:
