Those are good skills to learn. The schools in the US are turning their emphasis to science, math, and tests (which are certainly important) and neglecting life skills. Public speaking is useful in many occupations.
I'm a happy American, but I get frustrated with our school systems. They claim to want to ''catch up'' to foreign schools, but don't look to those schools for guidance and advice. Parents need to step in to fill in the gaps that used to be taught in school, but sadly, many won't. One of my sons is a teacher, so I hear a lot from him!
