Pope John Paul II paid a State Visit to the UK in 1982 and met with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The enclave was part of the Papal States until 1791 its annexation by France following the French Revolution.

The Palais des Papes was the scene of a brutal massacre in October 1791 during the annexation.
