Wedding of Prince Rainer and Princess Grace looked in Monaco on April 15th 1956. She looked so elegant and a good choice of wedding gowns. I don't think another Royal bride will look as elegant as she did, with the exception of Princess Maxima. Does anyone know who designed it? :D

Oh, thank you MihoshiMarie! What a lovely photograph. Finding color photographs of the wedding is a bit difficult and I always had a different idea of what color Grace's gown was. I always thought it was more to the cream or "candlelight" than true white. Her hair is also a great deal darker than I originally thought.

Last night, while cleaning up some threads, I came across some pictures of Grace's wedding dress and have added them to this thread. They are on the first page because of the date they were posted, so check them out. They're beautiful.

1956: Prince Rainier marries Grace Kelly
Prince Rainier III of Monaco has married the film actress Grace Kelly.
A civil ceremony was held in the throne room in the Palace of Monaco today.

The ceremony, conducted by the president of the Monaco Supreme Court, was attended by the couple's close family and friends.

Miss Kelly, wearing a beige, lace dress with a close-fitting hat, was noticeably nervous throughout the proceedings.

Nuptial Mass

Following the legal formalities the couple made a short appearance on the balcony of the palace where approximately 500 members of the public waited below.

The newly-married couple, surrounded by an abundance of red and white flowers, waved to the crowds for just a couple of minutes before they returned inside the palace.

The marriage ceremonies are due to be completed tomorrow at the celebration of the Nuptial Mass in the Cathedral of Monaco, after which the couple are expected to drive through the streets of Monte Carlo in an open top car.

The couple, who announced their engagement in January, will spend their honeymoon cruising around the Mediterranean aboard Prince Rainier's yacht, Deo Juvante II.

I read that just a few royals attended this wedding:

Aga Khan - HH Prince Karim
Egypt - HM King Farouk II
Great-Britain - HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (former King Edward VIII)
Italy - HM King Umberto II

(Both the Egyptian and the Italian monarchs were exiled at that time). The European Royal Families were represented.

I would like to see pictures of these four royals who were present in the Cathedral of St. Nicolas, in Monaco, in 1953

The Event: Though Prince Rainier and Princess Grace were officially married in a civil ceremony on April 18, the religious ceremony the following day, billed "The Wedding of the Century", is the event that 30 million viewers watched on television. Following Monaco tradition, Grace, escorted by her father, was the first to walk down the aisle. The Prince came last, wearing a Napoleonic military-style uniform, which he designed himself.

The Dress: A wedding gift from MGM Studios, Grace Kelly's wedding dress was designed by MGM's head costume designer, Helen Rose. The high-necked gown was created from four hundred and fifty yards of Brussels rose-point lace and silk taffeta, while her veil was embroidered with pearls and orange blossoms, and she carried a small Bible and her lilies-of-the-valley bouquet.

The Reception: Seven hundred guests attended a reception in the Palace Court of Honor. The bride and groom cut the six-tier wedding cake with the Prince's sword.

Special Moments: On April 18, after they were officially married in the civil ceremony, Grace and Rainier held a reception for the 3,000 citizens for Monaco. This was an opportunity for each of Rainier's citizens to shake hands with their new princess.

Monaco wedding guests

Was any other royal houses represented at Princess Grace and Rainiers marriage? Also was any other royals present at Staphanie and Carolines marriages?
 
All I have read is the British Royal family declined the invitation to Prince Rainier's marriage to Princess Grace. There was a list of 600 or 800 guests depending on the source.

Princess Caroline's marriage to Philippe Junot had a pre-wedding ball held at the Palace. The guest list was 800 including the cream of European aristocracy and minor royalty; the representatives of the English, Dutch, Beligian, Danish and Swedish monarchies had declined to attend.

Princess Stephanie was marriage to Daniel in a civil cermony at town hall. Forty people attended including her family. Prince Albert was the only close family member to attend the dinner. To my knowledge none were present at her second marriage.
 
I'd be curious to see if representatives of the British, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish royal families will attend Albert's wedding.

You know I find it funny that the Sovereign Prince of Monaco is the only ABSOLUTE ruler of any european country and the other royal households feel like they are the "Black Sheep" royals.

Watching some programs this weekend on different royal families they talked about how most of them had no power and merely there to represent their country. I think they used Sweden as an example.

So I just don't understand in anything that has been written about how the other royal households feel superior and decline invitations to events in Monaco.

One royal family sure to attend will be the Italian Royals since Albert did have something to do with Clotilde and Emmanualle Filiberto meeting. And they are supposed to be really good friends.

But I am sure some would attend as the royal houses are changing with more modern monarchs. And with Ernst August of Hannover being married to HRH Caroline, you could bet on the being that family represented as well.

Okay enough rambling. I will get back to my less than regal life.

I can understand why some royals declined invitations (or weren't invited at all) to Caroline's three weddings and Stephanie's two weddings, but why did they turn down the invitations to Ranier and Grace's wedding?

I think that whenever Albert gets married, the royal guests will likely be his counterparts for whom he has attended their weddings, such as Frederik, Felipe, Willem, etc. But likely we'll not see some of the reigning kings and queens as we saw at the other weddings, such as Sofia, Margrethe, Silvia attending Haakon's wedding.
 
Albert is very private person. I would like to say when he makes that commitment it would be very private for that reason however the situation require's more. His marriage unlike his sisters would be a State affair like his parents. Its sad when the day that is suppose to be considered your day with the person you love and chose to marry can't be the type of union you would like. Hey you never know he might already be married.
 
Yes,i also think no Monarch at Prince Albert's Wedding.Maybe only the representive of them maybe:
.Britain: Prince Charles
.Denmark: Prince Frederik and Princess Mary
.The Netherlands: Maybe Constantijn and Laurentien.
.....
But do the Monacan Royal Family have relationship with other Royal families.I usually saw Prince Albert goes with Prince Charles at Royal weddings,or funerals.
 
When Prince Rainier and Princess Grace got married the only royal present was King Farouk Of Egypt.

When Caroline married Phillipe Junot the Count and Countess of Barcelona were present. Her other 2 weddings were mainly a private ocassion so that's the reason why there weren't any royals and only family members and close friends. The same can be said about Princess Stephanie's weddings, while on her 1995 wedding was attended by her family, her 2003 wedding wasn't, but Prince Albert telephoned her that day, or so it has been said.

Since Albert's wedding will be a state wedding I'm pretty sure we'll see some royals and heads of state because he has a very good relationship with most of them.

i think Prince Albert would chose different country like CP Frederick who marry to Mary Donaldson in May 2004 both wanted have lavish wedding or gala wedding used as tiara.

if he wanted chose as perfect wife they would used have lavish or gala wedding if following intives of tiara or hats choses or military suites or morning suites.

i would understand Albert is private person but he dont wanted copy his sister's wedding like that but he is 46 years old same my mum's ages! but im sure if he would wanted bigger wedding or small wedding like his sister did! no matter!

Why Royals "Snubbed" Grace/Ranier Wedding

Hi there! Interesting question. Re: British royals, Queen Elizabeth did not feel House of Monaco was worthy of her attendance although her husband disagreed and wanted to attend. I think they sent a tray.....Grace and Ranier were disappointed. Many royal families see/saw Monaco and this marriage in particular, as a "show biz" wedding and did not deem it worthy of attendance 'tho gifts were sent. Grace gradually endeared herself to many--suffice to say, perhaps a few later regretted their decision to not attend. Monaco's reputation as a "sunny place for shady people" likely didn't enhance respectability and therefore suitability of attending occasion. And the British family DID attend Grace's funeral by sending Princess Diana.....although originally wanted Prince Charles to go but he had obligations and Diana loved Grace for her kindnesses to her from the start. Caroline's new status makes her status--marrying relative of QE--more royal but does that translate into attendance of more royals at other weddings? That one I simply don't know.

Golly that's all??? doesn't Monaco's Royalt family have a good relationship with other Royal families???
