Don't know about it being a surprise engagement, but it was surely a quick one. They had just met at the Olympic Games in Atlanta which took place in August or September, IIRC. Thus they got engaged after only 8 or 9 months, at the most.

I have become very disenchanted with this couple but I sure liked them in the beginning. They were very photogenic and oozed chemistry at their wedding.

And Cristina is still on my list of Most Beautiful Royal Brides.
