Prince Frederik and Princess Mary attended Christmas Service at Aarhus Cathedral. The Danish Royal Family is spending Christmas at Marselisborg Castle near Aarhus.

Crownprince Frederik has once again been voted "dane of the year". He has been every year since 1997 with 2001 as the only exception.
Every year a danish opinion poll firm ask the danes which dane has said or done something special for Denmark this year and Frederik came in first.

Crownprincess Mary came in third place.

Princess Alexandre came in as number 6 and Margrethe came in as number 12.

In 2001 the coach of the danish womes handball team was elected as dane of the year. I suppose because the team won the olympics the year before, and were (are) a big succes. So Frederik wasn't unpopular that year, someone else was just a little more popular. I'm not sure wat place he came in at.

Well we know the royals and their ladies in waiting (and I think the Prime Minister's wife) all wore hats (the royals also wear hats inside the church for weddings, christenings, funerals etc)

But good point, maybe the hats allows them to hide their faces (a bit like a veil).

I agree. I had thought that it was common etiquette that no one wears hats indoors, especially in somewhat sacred events like that.

I had not heard the sacred events rule but generally women are allowed to wear hats inside and men are not(Bishops excluded)

I'm Catholic and I also believe its an unwritten rule that one shouldn't wear hats inside a church. I thought that this applied to other Christian denominations too, but then I started royalty-watching and saw that many royals wear hats inside the church (funerals, weddings, christenings etc.... check out the funeral of Prince Claus and Princess Juliana of the Netherlands, the wedding of Felipe and Letizia, Prince Bernard's funeral etc).

Also, on further investigation, I noticed that many non-royal ladies also wear hats. So perhaps the no-hat rule only applies to certain denominations?

MARY SUPPORTS SAD FREDERIK AT TSUNAMI MEMORIAL

3 JANUARY 2005

A clearly emotional Crown Prince Frederik was comforted by his wife when he attended a memorial for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami tragedy. Princess Mary reached over and took her husband's hand as they listened to the service in Copenhagen Cathedral at the weekend.

As a long-time supporter of the Danish Red Cross, Frederik's concern for humanitarian issues is well-known. Since taking over from his father as commissioner of the organisation back in 2002 he has made several trips to trouble-spots around the world in order to highlight its work.

The 36-year-old is also expected in Australia in March, where he will be guest of honour at the Australian Red Cross ball. Needless to say his wife, who hails from Down Under, will be accompanying him to the glitzy event.

"It will be great to have the prince and princess back in Sydney, and they will always be welcome to the Olympic City, the place where they met and fell in love," said a spokesman.

But now I'm so totally confused. So Catholics are supposed to wear hats to church? Well I don't see a lot of that (I don't remember ever seeing it in the masses I've attended.. not that I've been paying particularly close attention to people's headgear... veils maybe, but not hats).
