Weekly update to 11th July

Not such a busy week with only 86 engagements in total. The Coronation Festival started and it is interesting that so many royals were seen there but not listed in the CC and so no credit for them - e.g. only The Queen was officially mentioned as attending the Gala as the rest are lumped together as 'other members of the RF'.

HM The Queen - 220 (213 - up 7)
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh - 117 (117 - no change)

Weekly update to 17th July

Another rather quiet week with just 93 engagements although the Gloucesters were amongst the busiest as they did a day tour in Gloucestershire while Charles and Camilla were in Wales and The Queen and Anne had their combined day in the Lake District. I guess Edward and Sophie are on holidays with their children oon school holidays so I don't begrudge them some family time.

A note that the princes' polo matches last weekend weren't mentioned in the CC so they weren't official duties for anyone asking why no additions for William and Harry.

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall - 4

Also, I have been wondering why the updates are only to mid-week and not to the end of the week ie July 27th?

Thanks.

The reason for going Thursday to Thursday is:

1. The CC is published the day AFTER the events.
2. I live in Australia
3. I don't get the update until effectively two days after the event e.g. Monday's events are in the CC on Tuesday in London but for me it is Wednesday - and in the afternoon as I work
4. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are only available the following Monday in the UK which for me is Tuesday here.
4. To do it to the end of the week I would have to do the update on a Tuesday and it takes about 30 minutes to do the new post each week - and even then I miss some things when I re-read.

NB have edited Camilla to 74

A week or so ago people were discussing the opening and use of the different royal palaces so I have done some analysis to show which palaces etc are used:

BP is the most heavily used of course followed by CH and St James (which are also part of the same complex). These figures are up to 2nd July this year. With the exception of BP they are totals by ALL members of the family. The KP ones are all done by the Gloucestors who received a lot of people there while The Duke of Kent receives people at St James. With regard to Holyrood - they aren't all from this week and include events hosted there by a number of The Queen's children.

BPQ (Buckingham Palace done by The Queen) - 104
BP (done by others) - 156
CH - 101
St James - 49
KP - 21
Windsor - 23
Marlborough House - 3
Sandringham House - 10
Holyrood House - 14
Balmoral - 0 (but that will probably change when The Queen goes north and has audiences and council meetings up there).

This is the number of 'events' as opposed to 'engagements'. So if two or more royals attended the event it is only counted once even though up to 19 royals may have attended the event.

I'm surprised at the relatively low number of events at St Js, i just would have though it would have been used more. I wonder if KP will soon be used more when The Cambridge's and their staff move in.

St James is used quite a bit but it is divided into two - CH and St James as St James includes CH.

I am pleased to see how Camilla has steadily upped the ante, and is now regularly doing >250 engagements a year. I think if she can consistently do >300 a year over the next few years, few would argue if she has the necessary experience to be the consort to the monarch.

The Cambridges' staff is already moved into KP just not their bosses. The state rooms of KP are opened to the public under the control of the historical royal palaces so I would think at any event done at KP by the Cambridges would be at their apt.

I agree; I remember that when Charles lived there he held meetings and small receptions at KP, same as he does now at CH.

The Gloucesters carry out engagements at KP so there is no reason why William and Kate can't do so. Margaret also did engagements there.

The Queen's cousins could be taken off the CC. Alexandra and the Duchess of Kent are no longer working royals for whatever reason, and it would be simpler so show fewer royals.

There was a press release last week saying that Princess Alexandra is returning to royal duties in September. she has been unwell.

The Duchess of Kent does make appearances at the request of the Queen and therefore should remain on the list. She has made 2 appearances so far this year.

The Duchess of Kent retired from public duties in the late 1990s due to health issues along with distancing herself from that life completely.

Alexandra hasn't done any duties this year due to poor health - as has been announced a number of times when she cancelled planned engagements a month or so at a time.

How do you know this - I mean - what's your source for this? The public areas are segregated from 1A and I had not yet heard from any source that some rooms had been opened. Please share.

Weekly update to 1st August

It is obvious that the royals are on their summer breaks as the number of duties has dropped a lot this week. This is normal although last year we saw them out and about in August due to the Olympics but that isn't the normal situation with August and September being holiday downtime for them.

Aah - but Beatrice, Eugenie and Prince and Princess Michael also make appearances but aren't listed. I think anyone making fewer than, say, 10 appearances a year need not be listed.

I think you are missing the point. Iluvbertie is reporting to us a running total of the Court Circular. She doesnt pick and choose what is reported - it is from the Court Circular.

And we all appreciate the work because BP do not do totals for the year.

I agree Iluvbertie does an excellent job in tallying the info.

But I think in general, BP could remove part-time working royals such as Dss of Kent and Princess Alexandra from the CC, as they contribute no more or less than some royals who aren't listed.

When they are listed they are either taking part in events at the invitation of the Queen or undertakinging events on her behalf. Even if she only asks someone once in a year to do something for her, they are acting on her behalf and therefore should be reported in the CC.

If you look at the list of royals on the list of the CC there are some who aren't there but who do get a mention and that is why I include them and always will.

It wouldn't matter if they removed the Duchess of Kent or Princess Alexandra from the list of members of the royal family - putting them in the same category as Beatrice, Eugenie and Prince and Princess Micheal of Kent - as they would still be mentioned in the CC on occasions.

The reason that they are there is so that people can actually do individual searches for them, which can't be one for Beatrice and Eugenie, Michael or Marie-Christine - both for the past or in the future.

Alexandra hasn't been doing anything this year due to ill health but there are reports that she will return to duty later this year and if so I would expect her to do quite a lot if well enough - she was over 100 last year.

Weekly update to 8th August

The slowest week of the year - only 16 engagements all week - as the family definitely are on holidays. Interestingly the Future Engagements area of the Monarchy website has 8 engagements total for the rest of the month - 1 by Philip and 7 for Edward and Charles website has none, zero, nadda for himself and Camilla to the end of September. I am sure that that won't be correct but we have to wait and see. Last year was an abboration with the Olympics and Paralympics at this time to boost numbers.

Weekly update to 23rd August

The slowest week of the year so far with 2 engagements in total, both done by Edward, and the Future Engagements section of the monarchy website indicates 1 engagment for the rest of August - by Edward. Things look like picking up again in September with 9 pages of engagments listed - but I find that the site won't let you actually move to pages other than the first one - I click on the '2' at the bottom of the page to go to the next page and nothing happens.

Obvious question I know but have you tried clicking next? I've found that the scroll bar must be at the bottom of the page for it to work. I've managed to see all of September which is how I found out DoE is doing something at Sandriingham on 30th September.

I have tried clicking 'next' and page numbers but nothing - just doesn't move onto the next page - ever. It did last year but hasn't worked this year.

ITs working for me - let me know if you want to know anything.

All I was trying to do was see how much things were going to pick up in September and the first page of September does enough to show things picking then. Interesting Charles site says that neither he nor Camilla will be doing anything for the rest of the year (someone hasn't updated the diary on his site).

Livens up a bit

Princess Royal 22
E of Wessex 21
C of wessex 6
D of Kent 8
P Alexandra 1

D of Glos 10
Dss of Glos 7
Glos together 3

DoE 1

I know we talk about the younger ones taking on more but it seems to me some of the slack is being taken up by the Gloucesters.
