Belgian State Visit to South Africa: Day Three – Cape Town

Today, Saturday March 25, third day of the state visit, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde moved to Cape Town, South Africa’s second-largest city and legislative capital of the country.
Upon the arrival in Cape Town the King and the Queen were received by Alan Winde, Premier of the Western Cape province of South Africa, and his wife. The Premier hosted a lunch for the Royal Couple.
Afterwards the King and the Queen paid a visit to the headquarter of Afrigen Biologics Vaccines, a biotechnology company founded in 2014 which “is dedicated to the local development and production of adjuvants for human and animal vaccines, as well as biologicals critical for Africa’s healthcare challenges”. The company collaborates with two Belgian companies, Univercells and eThERNA. The Royal Couple toured the company, met with employees and visited the production facility.
Then King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visited the University of the Western Cape (UWC) where they were welcomed by UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius, UWC Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research & Innovation, Prof José Frantz, and Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu. The Royal Couple visited the CoLab for e-Inclusion and Social Innovation, a project established in 2012 by UWC and four Flemish universities that aims to work “towards an inclusive approach for maximum participation in the competitive global digital society and economy”.
In the evening the King and the Queen visited the Zeitz Museum where they toured the exhibition “When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting” which “explores Black self-representation and celebrates global Black subjectivities and Black consciousness from pan-African and pan-diasporic perspectives”.
