Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Turns 40

Today, Tuesday June 21, Prince William celebrates his 40th birthday. The Prince, born on 21 June 1982, at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, is the elder son of The Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales and the second in line to the British throne. Prince William has a younger brother, Prince Henry, Duke of Sussex (born in 1984).
The Prince received his early education at Wetherby School in London and then attended Ludgrove School in Berkshire until 1995 when he started at Eton College in Windsor. After graduatin from Eton College with A Levels in Geography, Biology and History of Art, Prince William took a gap year travelling to Chile volunteer with Raleigh International, training with the Welsh Guards in Belize, studying conservation in Africa and working on a dairy farm in the UK. In September 2001, back from his gap year, the Prince started a four-year Master of Arts degree course in History of Art at St. Andrews University in Scotland. In 2005 Prince William graduated with a 2:1 Master of Arts (Honours) in Geography. Following the graduation, the Prince joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as an Officer Cadet and in December 2006 he was commissioned as an Army Officer. In early 2009 the Prince started the training as a Search and Rescue pilot and in September 2010 he joined C Flight, 22 Squadron at RAF Valley in Anglesey as a Search and Rescue Pilot. From March 2015 until July 2017 Prince WIlliam worked for East Anglian Air Ambulance.
During the university years Prince William met with Catherine Elizabeth Middleton who was studying History of Art.
After years of speculations about their relationship, on November 16, 2010 Clarence House announced William and Catherine’s engagement. On April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey Prince William married Catherine Elizabeth Middleton and they became The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The Duke and Duchess have three children: George Alexander Louis, born on 22 July 2013; Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, born on 2 May 2015 and Prince Louis Arthur Charles, born on 23 April 2018.
Prince William is involved in several patronages focused on sports, young people, mental health, wildlife conservation, military organisations and environment.
In October 2020 Prince William and the Royal Foundation, a charity which supports the work of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, created the Earthshot Prize, “the most prestigious global environment prize in history, designed to incentivise change and help repair our planet over the next ten years”. On Sunday 17th October 2021 took place the first ever Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony at Alexandra Palace in London to reward “five winners each year for their contributions to environmentalism”.
