Belgian State Visit to Canada: Day Two

Today, Tuesday March 13, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde started the second day of their Canadian state visit with a separate program.

In the morning the King attended an academic-scientific seminar at the presence of Belgian and Canadian academics, students and researchers. The seminar, titled “Multilingual Education and Language Learning in Canada and Belgium at a Crossroads”, was focused on multilingual education and language learning.

The Queen, in the meantime, had a working breakfast along with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of Belgium, Didier Reynders and members of the Canadian institutions. Topics of the meeting were the UN Sustainable Development Goals, education, health, nutrition, gender, inclusivity and the importance of the UN 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

Afterwards the Royal Couple was reunited for a visit at the National Gallery of Canada. Accompanied by Marc Mayer, Director and CEO of the National Gallery of Canada and Thomas D’Aquino, Chair of the National Gallery Foundation, the king and the Queen toured the Canadian and Indigenous art exhibitions.

At lunchtime the King had a working lunch at the residence of the Belgium Ambassador, while the Queen attended the conclusions of the seminar “Multilingual Education and Language Learning in Canada and Belgium at a Crossroads” followed by an accademic lunch.

In the afternoon the Royal Couple paid a visit to the Canadian War Museum. They visited the Memorial Hall and toured Le Breton Gallery, that contains the most extensive collection of military technology. The visit ended with a reception at the presence of war veterans.

Then the King and the Queen visited the Canadian Museum of Nature, where they toured an exhibition focused on the process of diamond mining. In the evening the Royal Couple hosted a concert and a dinner in honour of Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada at the Embassy of Belgium.
