Qatari Sheikh Tamim Meets With Turkish President in Ankara
The Emir of Qatar paid a working visit to the Republic of Turkey on Monday, during which he held talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, the Turkish capital.
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad was greeted at the Esenboga International Airport by Turkey’s Minister of National Defence and staff from the Qatari embassy, before travelling to the Palace for bilateral talks, which was only announced a few hours before they took place.
Qatar and Turkey have long been allies, with Qatar being Turkey’s “top ally in the Middle East”. Turkey, in reciprocation, has provided Qatar with cargo ships and plane loads of foodstuffs since June 2017, when the Gulf nation saw its ties with several neighbours (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE in particular) cut over accusations Qatar was “backing militants and fostering ties with Iran”.
