Today is the 75th birthday of Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark, the younger daughter of the late Paul I of Greece and Frederica of Hanover.

Irene was born in Cape Town, South Africa during the Royal Family’s exile during the Second World War. She was named after her paternal aunt, the Duchess of Aosta; the name meaning ‘peace’ in Greek.

Along with her parents and siblings (Constantine and Sofia), Princess Irene returned to Greece in 1946, where she lived until the Royal Family was deposed in 1967. A trained concert pianist, Irene never married.

The Princess currently resides in Spain, where her nephew is the reigning King.
