In the annual ceremony at the University of Alcalá, the King and Queen of Spain awarded the 2016 Miguel de Cervantes Literature Prize on Thursday April 20. The prize for 2016 was won by Spanish novelist Eduardo Mendoza Garriga.

King Felipe called Mr Mendoza Garriga a “true artisan of language” in his speech at the event, praising his “use of language to approach different realities, from that of the different marginal groups to that of the upper classes, at different times and in different places”.

The Miguel de Cervantes Literature Prize is awarded to honour lifetime achievements of Spanish language writers, and comes with a prize of €125,000.

Queen Letizia looked lovely in a cream dress with a design feature of appliqué black leaves.
