The Gardens of Elisabeta Palace

When we think of the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest, we imagine all the official functions and duties carried out there by Crown Princess Margarita and other members of the Romanian Royal Family throughout the year and often get a glimpse of the beautiful architecture and interiors of Palace through the photographs taken.

But what about the gardens? Well, last week the gardens were photographed to show some of the plants, flowers and trees growing there and, inspite of the late spring, the variety of colour and species of flora are quite impressive!

On the 18th May, it will be 16 years since the Palace became a royal residence again and in those years the gardens have been carefully tended and maintained not only by staff who work at the Palace, but also by King Michael himself and from time to time the teachers and students of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest.

An annual garden party is held in May where guests can explore the huge variety of shrubs, trees and flowers such as Forsythia, Magnolia and fruit trees. Since 2008 the idea of a “Memorial Tree” came about whereby dignitaries visiting the Palace plant a commemorative tree, such as the Maple tree the Prince of Wales planted in May 2011. The collection has now grown into a beautiful arboretum.

The Palace was inaugurated in 1937 and trees planted back then are still growing, such as a now ancient Japanese cherry tree.
