Denmark’s Crown Princess Pays Visit To Bangladesh

Crown Princess Mary has embarked on a multi-day visit to Bangladesh along with the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs, to bring focus to women’s economic opportunities in the nation. The visit is in conjunction with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

On her first day in the country, the Crown Princess visited the Barisal district which is impacted by floods and storms each year thanks to climate change. She met with women who take part in the Farmer Field School that teaches them farming techniques that assist with growing more crops even with increased water levels. The farming project is supported by Danida, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affair’s development program, who has donated 20millionDKK to the project.

“It gives them a confidence and a belief that they can do even more, which makes them more equal in their family and give them a voice in the community,” Princess Mary said to the accompanying media pack of the project.

The following day Mary was in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, visiting a school run by the Jaago Foundation and the Auko-Tex Group textile factory. At the school, the Princess watched as the young pupils went through their classes, saying she was “very impressed with their strength in spite of the challenges they have in everyday life.”

At the textile factory, the Princess was able to speak to the female workers about their conditions and the tasks they undertake, before getting a chance to try her hand at screen printing.
