Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Year Birthday Honours Revealed

Embargoed until 10:30pm last night, this year’s birthday honours in Britain were released overnight.

Rod Stewart becomes Sir Roderick for his services to music and charity. Major Tim Peake becomes the first man in space to be awarded on honour, he becomes a Companion of the order of St Michael and George for his services to space research and scientific contribution. Forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn joins the elite Companions of Honour in recognition of her services to entertainment and charity. Penelope Wilton becomes a Dame for her services to drama.

There are CBEs for England cricket captain Alastair Cook, former footballer Alan Shearer and broadcaster Janet Street-Porter, and OBEs for TV presenters Ant and Dec and actor Brian Blessed. Referee Nigel Owens becomes CBE, whereas Davies Cup winners Jamie Murray and and Leon Smith receive OBE’s.

Almost a personal nod for The Queen, Hayley Turner, the most successful female jockey in British history, is appointed OBE for services to horse racing following her retirement from the sport last year.

Not without controversy however David Cameron is accused of “dishing out” gongs to at least 20 pro-eu bosses at the most controversial time in June with the EU referendum coming up.
