Queen Elizabeth Kicks Off 90th Birthday Celebrations in Windsor

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh have begun the monarch’s birthday celebrations a day early as they paid visits around Windsor.

They first stopped at the Royal Mail’s Windsor Delivery Office to mark the postal service’s 500th anniversary this year. The couple were able to meet with some of the postmen and women, as well as the post sorters during their visit.

When told of how many pieces of mail Royal Mail delivers each year, the almost-90-year-old monarch quipped with a smile, “I’ve probably added to that this week.”

The Queen and Prince Philip were shown a demonstration of mail sorting as well as an exhibition of stamps the Royal Mail has produced over the years – including the newest, a stamp sheet of the Queen with her three direct heirs.

Wearing a fuchsia coat over a white floral dress by Stewart Parvin paired with a matching hat from Rachel Trevor-Morgan, the Queen later went on to officially open the new bandstand at Alexandra Gardens. The bandstand was built to mark the Queen’s 2015 milestone, becoming the longest reigning British monarch in history.

Schoolchildren sang a delightful rendition of Happy Birthday for the Queen during the opening, and earned themselves a chuckle from Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip when they then burst out in Beatles hit When I’m 64 that was selected as a tribute to the Queen’s reign.
