Habsburg Heir Installed as Knight in the Order of St. George

Archduke Ferdinand Zvonimir of Austria has been installed as a knight in the order of St. George on May 5th. The heir to the house of Austria received the knighthood from his father, Archduke Karl. His younger sister Archduchess Gloria was also present at the ceremony, absent were his mother Francesca and his eldest sister Eleonore.

The history of the order goes back several centuries. A predecessor was created bycreated by Rudolph, Count of Habsburg who reigned as Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1273-1291  in 1290. German Emperor Frederick III (1415-1493),  resurrected the Order of St. George of Carinthia and Austria in 1468 for the purpose of defending the religion against heretics, specifically, against the invading Turks. The first thirteen Prince Grand Masters of the Order were all from the House of Habsburg ad were descended from the Emperor Rudolf I. The emblem to signify the Order is the classical St. George slaying the dragon. The present grand master of the order is Archduke Karl.
