Dutch Royals attend Remembrance and Liberation Day

The commemorations for the Remembrance and Liberation Day coincided, this year, with the first public event for King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima after the Inauguration of April 30th.

On May 4th, the King along with the Queen and Prime Ministe Mark Rutte attended a memorial service at the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam to commemorate the victims of the Second World War. Later, they placed a wreath at the National Monument in the Dam Square in memory of those who died during the World War II. Two minutes of silence were observed.

During the same day, Princess Margriet, accompanied by Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven and Prince Pieter-Christiaan, visited the Soldier Field of Honour Grebbeberg in Rhenen to attend their commemoration ceremony.

On Sunday May 5th, the Liberation Day, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Princess Beatrix were present at the traditional concert that closed the celebration of the National Liberation. The concert took place on and around the Amstel Royal Theatre Carrè in Amsterdam. Prime Minister Mark Rutte was present too.

This was the first public event for Princess Beatrix since April 30th. The Princess presided the Remembrance and Liberation Days ceremonies for 33 years as Queen.
