On January 5th, His Majesty The King of Spain celebrated his 74th Birthday. Many would agree that 2011 was a rather difficult year for the Spanish Monarch.

April 2011 saw the absence of the King from the annual Royal Easter gathering at Palma de Mallorca, the first time this has happened for many years. The summer of 2011 also saw the King having surgery on his right knee and then an operation on his Achilles tendon. In July 2011, His Majesty was absent from the wedding of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, and he was not represented by any other members of the Royal Family.

In November 2011 King Juan Carlos suffered a domestic accident at the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, which left with him with bruising around his left eye and cuts to his nose. Of course, this did not stop the King performing his official duties and he was later photographed wearing dark sunglasses for the rest of that week.

The ongoing scandal surrounding the King’s son-in-law, Don Iñaki Urdangarín, saw the Royal Household announce in December that the Duke of Palma de Mallorca has been suspended from all official royal duties. Late last month, the Royal Household released for the first time a full breakdown of the Royal Budget.

What 2012 holds in store for the King and the Spanish Royal Family, we will have to wait and see, but I would like to wish His Majesty a very happy and belated birthday wish.
