The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Family, News and Events 9: August 2023 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The King's illness and the Princess of Wales being also out of commission for the foreseeable future have created a temporary shortage of working royals. Although this shortage is manageable without having to draft any extra workers, it opens a window of opportunity for Harry to negotiate a possible return to (at least partial) working royal status, which I think is something that he wants. The stumbling block would again be Meghan, as I believe she would not agree to relocate to the United Kingdom.

He’s made it clear that the chance for something like that has passed.

Overall, I think they’ll be fine. Just a moment of people down but work is still being done. So like ACO said, this will pass soon enough.

Harry has arrived per the media.

Another stumbling block would be that the majority of people in the UK don't want them back.

No, there's been too much bad feeling for that.

I would like to see father and son on better terms, but then I feel it would be best on all counts if Harry quietly returns to the life he said he wanted.

I just hope he doesn't exploit this.

Honestly don’t think majority of the UK population care much about any of them too deeply. The royal bubble is not the general public.

:previous: I live in the UK, so with respect, I think I have a better understanding of what people in the UK are thinking. I will leave it at that.

Small steps forward and I'm very glad for Charles. I think he was absolutely devastated how it all played out. Personally, as Harry's father and professionally in his vision, to lose a (or 2 ) full time incredibly popular "Firm Member".

Even a little thawing of the freeze will be a bonus for Charles, stress and health wise.

It speaks volumes that the King called BOTH of his sons with the news and that Harry is headed to the UK now.

I would have expected Charles to tell his sons- and siblings- the news himself. You don’t staff that out. Even given the difficulties with Harry.

More notable to me is Harry actually coming. I don’t think he has come to the UK one time for a personal, strictly private visit since 2019. It has all been for charities or a public event, funeral, etc.

While it sounds like they caught the cancer early, and hopefully that means it’s not too serious, it’s good to visit now. You never know. And he didn’t take the opportunity to visit his grandmother shortly before she passed. Maybe he learned from that.

For those asking about Meghan and the kids only Harry was in the car.

Agreed that there is no path back for Harry into The Firm.

The Family, also The Courtiers, who are also integral to smooth operations, were also greatly maligned too. Just not feasible now.

And I agree with Shady Lady, I don't think that the majority of The British People would want them back.

But during this health crisis for 75 year old King Charles, its nice to think that some kind of rapprochement can soften feelings.

I agree it is good of Harry to visit. Not long after Harry arrived at Clarence House, the King and Queen departed for Sandringham. It will be interesting to see if Harry does get to spend much time with his father on this trip.

No way that H&M will come back into the royal fold on an official basis. Too much water under the bridge at this point.

Who could trust them ever again?

Well said.

Agreed. I certainly think it's only right that Harry quickly made his way to the UK. I would also agree that in the early days following a cancer diagnosis chaos can be the order of the day as treatment plans are figured out, diaries are rescheduled, etc. so it doesn't make sense right now to throw two toddlers in the mix. Once the news has had time to settle and the new realities have become a bit more routine there's plenty of time to bring the children to visit should they decide that's appropriate. However, given how soon after his appearance the King and Queen departed for Sandringham it will be interesting to see how much time Harry really gets to spend with him and how long he'll remain in the UK.

That surprised me very much that after such a long flight from California and obviously such a short visit in Clarence House, Charles and Camilla already left for Sandringham again. My understanding was that his cancer treatment will take place in London.

From Russel Myers at the Mirror:
NEW: Princes William and Harry have "no plans" to see each other during the Duke of Sussex's trip to the UK to visit the King following his cancer diagnosis... 1/2

Sources close to both brothers say Prince William is "focussing on other matters", with the Princess of Wales recovering from abdominal surgery, while Harry would have "gladly accepted" a chance to meet the Prince of Wales “if the opportunity were to arise". 2/2

I couldn't help but laugh at the second tweet. With everything William has on his plate right now, the very last thing he needs to be worrying about is the possibility that Omid Scobie or Gayle King might reveal the details of any potential conversation with his brother. It was good of Harry to visit his father, but William's priorities clearly lay elsewhere at the moment.

If Charles and Harry want to visit further- Harry can go to Sandringham.

am i the only one who finds it strange that harry came from LA as quickly as possible to see charles, and only got to see the king 'briefly' before the King and Queen departed for Sandringham? coming from so far, you'd think that charles would spend some days with him in london, or harry would travel with them up north.

interesting that meghan seems to show no interest in stepping foot in the UK again.

with respect to prince william, i am not at all surprised they won't meet. who would, if they were william? (at any time, but specifically right now with so much on his plate - the least he'd want is to deal with a leak at best, or another offensive declaration)

Yes it is but it is not daily treatment. So staying at Sandringham between appointments is not that big a stretch. It will allow him outside space for long walks etc .

It did appear short but we do not know what was discussed or other plans. Sandringham is in Norfolk , a doable journey for Harry.

And *if* Harry stayed at secure and palatial Sandringham, there wouldn't be the Security issue. Plus, its big enough he wouldn't be underfoot there.

Seems like a LONG journey for Harry, if it was basically a drive by visit at Clarence House. But maybe, he was eager to show his sincerity to attempt a fence mending with Charles. Maybe this situation shook Harry ? He is a father now himself, with experience.

When this whole debacle unfolded and unraveled four years ago.....he really wasn't. Archie wasn't even talking. Just months old. Now he has two active children. Perspectives change.

William, repairing that sibling relationship, that's going to be a tough nut a crack. A cement one actually.

Harry apparently drove right to Charles and they visited for about 45 minutes. Then Charles and Camilla were on a scheduled helicopter. Maybe Harry will see him more. Maybe not. I’m just glad father and son had some true time together which hasn’t happened in years. Baby steps.

Harry entered Clarence House at 14.45 and Charles left at 15.35 so it seems Harry flew from LA to have about 30-40 mins with his father. I wonder if Harry expected such a short time slot or whether he'll have an opportunity to see his father again before he heads home?

There is not a chance that those two will be working Royals again. Period, as you would say in America.

Agreed!

Exactly. If I were Prince William I would be making sure PH stays well away from both him and his family. Like many people, I've had sibling issues of my own and, sadly, sometimes the only way to deal with them is no contact; to set firm boundaries and stick to them, for the sake of one's own wellbeing and peace of mind.

Looking at Sky News now (the first time I've put the TV on since last night!) it says there are no plans for William and PH to meet which, if true, is both unsurprising and reassuring IMO. There is no need - or desire on William's part I would imagine - for them to meet, and I'm sure William is more than aware of the risks of such a meeting.

I agree to the idea of staying at Sandringham, Harry might follow after he has gotten over the jetlag. There isn't only the security issue but also they won't be bothered by the noisy press and could spend time together peacefully.

It is good to see Harry spend some time with family. Also, 11hour flight is a looong journey and difficult for his children especially on such short notice. I'm not surprised that he came alone.

Could Harry's role as Counsellor of State be a factor? He has not been removed from the list, correct?

Regarding comments on KC's possible treatments ... I can only share my experiences with treatment for Stage 1 Bladder Cancer:

6-consecutive Fridays I received BCG treatment through a catheter into my bladder. I went home and literally had to lie down for 2 hours and toss from side-to-side every 15 minutes. After 2 hours I was finally able to urinate. After the 6-week treatment I waited another 6 weeks for a cystoscopy to see if there were any tumors on my bladder. All was done in a doctor's office.

I had a total of 18 treatments.

Hope this helps.
