The title had me puzzled for a while: what would she be doing at the European Council? The meeting of Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel and all the prime ministers of the EU.

But after googling it seems this is a think tank. Which explains the high number of former- politicians. There is a former Danish Prime Minister, a former Finnish prime minister, a fromer Swedish prime minister, etc.

The annual Quote 500 (the 500 wealthiest Dutch persons) estimates the fortune of HRH Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau on 880.000.000,-- Euro (appr 1,020,000,000.-- US Dollar).


The same magazine estimates the fortune of the family Orange-Nassau (Beatrix, Willem-Alexander) on 1.100.000.000,-- Euro (appr. 1,275,818,500.-- US Dollar).

Pardon my ignorance but I have a few questions

1. How did Mabel come to be a billionaire?
2. Does this mean she is richer than her husband's family?
3. I thought Mabel lived in London with her girls- does this mega-mansion imply that they will be moving back to the Netherlands?

1. Thanks to a very good investment by prince Friso, see Duc_et_Pair's earlier description.
2. Yes, most likely.
3. Given that she apparently bought the villa 3 years ago, I don't think they are in a hurry to move back to the Netherlands.

1. Her husband had invested in stocks of a start up company, Ayden - specialised in online payments. The company went to the stock exchange a few years ago and the stock price exploded.
2. She will be richer than most of them. Except perhaps the husband of Pss Carolina. The wealth of the RF is not known and estimates vary so if she owns more than the King or his mother is not clear.
3. She still lives in London indeed. Mabel was raised in/near Breukeleveen. Her mother lives close by. Her mother-in-law lives 15 minutes away by car. Perhaps she wants to stay there part of the year, in the weekends or plans to settle there when the daughters are going to university?
 
Quote estimates Mabel on some 1 billion US Dollars and the Orange-Nassaus (Beatrix, Willem-Alexander) on 1,3 billion US Dollar. The wealth of Mabel is traceable: it are investment portfolios. The wealth of Beatrix / Willem-Alexander is a mystery as they do not directly hold investment portfolios but seems to do it all via legal entities, holdings, trust offices, to guarantee anonymity. So their estimate is what it is: judt an estimate. Maybe they are as poor as a church mouse, who knows?

They don't get her title completely right. Mabel herself uses 'Mabel van Oranje' but if they want to include her being a princess she is of course not a 'highness' but a 'royal highness' and not a princess X of Orange but of Orange Nassau. So, while futile, I am happy to tell Forbes that she should be referred to as 'HRH Princess Mabel van Oranje-Nassau' (or 'of Orange-Nassau' if they wish to translate to English) - or indeed as 'Mabel van Oranje' (as she herself prefers to do); HH Princess Mabel van Oranje is incorrect on various accounts.

In Luana and Zaria's case, the Netherlands would almost be like a foreign country as they've never lived in the Netherlands nor gone to school there. I assume they visit their grandmother and other family members frequently but their friends are most likely not Dutch but British or from other places around the world (no clue what school they attend and what their school population is like), so for them it might be interesting to study in the Netherlands at some point.
 
According to Quote 500 princess Mabel is still among the richest 100 people of the Netherlands but while she was placed at position 50 last year, this year they put her at 68 - because her fortune diminished by almost 25% - but is still at about 680 million.

Luana turns 18 in a few days. I imagine she will pursue a university education.

Princess Mabel successfully manages to shield her private life (and that of her daughters). We even do not see pictures of ski holidays with their grandmother Princess Beatrix in Lech am Arlberg (Austria). Princess Mabel is one of the wealthiest (in cash) of the royal family so her secluded daughters have all chances on a carefree life out of the media.

Their fellow countess Eloise, at the other hand, is even nicknamed gravinfluencer because of her social media omnipresence. The difference with her invisible Kensington-based cousines is enormous.

Very very good investments it seems. I wonder if the rest of the RF benefited from his advice too. I wonder how much of this Mabel actually has and how much is a case of "looking rich on paper". Either way she clearly has enough money to support herself and her family and can to choose what work to do / not do. Good for her.

Prince Johan Friso worked at Goldman Sachs and reportedly was the financial adviser of his parents and his brothers.

Princess Mabel is rich in reality. Not in unsellable historic collections but in active stocks. Prince Friso was a founder-shareholder in WizzAir as he saw the opportunity of low budget travel to the East of Europe after the end of the Iron Curtain. Then Prince Friso saw potential in a platform which handles payments for online trade (when you buy something on the net, you are directed to a third party payment website). That platform (Adyen) made his wealth to explode. Add to this investments in Telenet (Belgium's premier internet provider), in commercial MRI scan centres and maybe more we do not know about.
 
Sorry I meant the talk of her fortune "diminishing" further up the thread is more likely the value of the investments she holds falling in value, until she sells them (if she does) they will go up and down in value regularly. That does not affect the cash she has in her bank as it were.

Luana van Oranje-Nassau van Amsberg seems to study at Sevenoaks in Kent. Last year she won the Itchenor sailing event (a fleet racing event featuring 72 boats from 16 schools) for Sevenoaks, together with partner Martin Etilla.
