The Dutch Royal Family has celebrated today, Tuesday September 21, the official opening of the parliament, Prinsjesdag. King Willem-Alexander was accompanied by his wife, Queen Máxima, his brother Prince Constantijn and his sister-in-law, Princess Laurentien.
Also this year, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the ceremony was adjusted: the event took place at the Grote Kerk insted of the Ridderzaal and the balcony scene at Noordeinde Palace was canceled. Their Majesties, along with Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, arrived at the Grote Kerk at around 13:20.
The King started his speech talking about “major international developments” such as coronavirus, climate change and the current situation in Afghanistan and the uncertain future of the Afghan people. King Willem-Alexander also praised all the Dutch people who “continued to work in the interests of all of us during the corona crisis, often under difficult circumstances”, adding that: “In the Caribbean part of our Kingdom, life has become more difficult for many people due to corona, because the island economies have been hit hard by the huge decline in tourism”.
Talking about the Dutch economy the King said that “is in good shape, certainly in comparison with other countries” and that “is expected to bounce back this year and next and unemployment will remain at a historically low level”.
Queen Maxima wore a two-piece gown consisting of a taffeta silk skirt in pastel colors with abstract floral print and a orange three quarter sleeve wool top from the Belgian fashion house Natan. It was paired with a matching turban and a Oscar de la Renta red satin clutch.
Princess Laurentien wore a dark gray brocade gown with a gold and black floral pattern from the fashion house Hardies Couture The Hague. It was paired with a matching headband.
