Queen Mathilde Attends Queen Elisabeth Music Contest Award Ceremony

Yesterday, Tuesday May 31, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of the Belgians participated in the award ceremony of the International Queen Elisabeth Grand Prize – the Queen Mathilde Prize that this year was focused on the piano competition. The ceremony took place at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Waterloo.

Winner of this year was the Czech pianist Lukas Vondracek who received a prize of 25,000€ and the opportunity to hold concerts in Belgium and abroad. Also the other finalists received a money prize.

The music competition was started in 1937 by Queen Elisabeth of Belgium in memory of her good friend Eugène Ysaÿe, a Belgian concert-violinist. In 1951 the competition was renamed Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in honour of Queen Elisabeth.
