Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan visited the Kara Tepe refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos in her capacity as advocate for the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

During her visit, Queen Rania met with Syrian refuges. Queen Rania said during the visit “This is an exceptional crisis and it requires an exceptional response. It requires a response that is collective and that is value-based, a response that is built on burden sharing not burden shifting.” Her Majesty met with two Syrian families and one Afghan family who talked to Queen Rania about their experience and hopes.

Queen Rania took time in a painting activity with children.

At the camp, Queen Rania was briefed on the refuge situation on the Greek island by the Mayor of Lesbos, Spyros Gallinons.

Accompanying Her Majesty on the visit was the IRC Country Director Mr. Panos Navrozidis who said “For refugees, Her Majesty Queen Rania’s visit today reassures them that they are not alone. There are many people across the world who care deeply for their plight and are working to ensure a better, safer future for them and for their families.”
