Prince Carl Philip and Motor Racing

Prince Carl Philip had a solid season start after missing the Skövde season start, claiming sixth in the first race and eighth in the second race.
“I really enjoyed being back again. I would like to have had a bit more time in the car, but I am pleased with the season start. I have two really talented team mates with Richard and Robert that I can get some tips from,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Carl Philip doesn't have a car for next year, because STCC changes regulations.

Polestar Cyan Racing evaluates ways to remain in STCC format following rule change
The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) organisers announced today that the main class will change regulations to TCR next year. While Polestar Cyan Racing will not construct a car in line with the new regulations for 2017 due to its focus on the FIA WTCC programme, the team is evaluating ways to remain active in the STCC package.
”We have supported top level touring car racing in Sweden and the STCC for more than two decades. We want to continue our involvement in the championship, but as we don’t have a TCR car, we need to evaluate other options available within the STCC format for 2017,” said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar.
The new TCR regulations differs vastly from the current STCC regulations, meaning that the current STCC cars will not be eligible from 2017.

Seven brands already compete in TCR and another handful are underway to develop cars. But among those isn't Volvo, which has been biggest team and brand in STCC. They choose to invest in WTCC.
- It has been the biggest headache for us. Volvo has done much for STCC, but we still can't make decisions based on a single manufacturer, says Jonas Lundin from STCC.
That Volvo has no TCR car means that Prince Carl Philip will not run in the STCC's main serie next year.
- We have flexible contracts with our drivers and teams. Likewise, his contract with us, it may include various forms of motorsports. We are fully confident that we will compete together next year, but in what way, that is what we are looking at now, said Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Head of Motorsport at Polestar.
Nor STCC's CEO Jonas Lundin thinks Carl Philip racing ends in Sweden.
- No, I do not think so. He will move on to other types of assignments, hopefully in STCC. It is something we are already talking about.
Do you think that Carl Philip will be racing next year?
- I think, and hope, we love Carl Philip. And he loves it here, it's his little oasis. We run a number of other racing classes, and we're looking at if you might be able to lift out some of the cars we drive today to some other class. But nothing is clear.

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) continues this weekend at former Formula 1 circuit Anderstorp.
Prince Carl Philip landed two points finishes last year at Anderstorp and is keen to continue scoring points after missing the first race weekend of 2016.
”Anderstorp is a unique circuit that I always look forward to. The previous race at Mantorp was okay result wise, but I am hoping to improve this weekend,” said Prince Carl Philip.
The weekend at Anderstorp starts today with testing and qualifyings, the two races are on Sunday at 13.00 and 16.00.

And 9th at the second test. His teammates: Robert Dahlgren was 2nd and Richard Göransson 3rd.

Carl Philip was 9th at the 1st qualifying. His teammates: Robert Dahlbren was 2nd and Richard Göransson 5th.

And because Carl Philip was 9th at the 1st qualifying, he didn't get into 2nd one, where only the eight best of the first get. But he will start from P2 in Race 2 with the reversed grid.

Prince Carl Philip had a tough qualifying session and was ninth in the first Q1 session, meaning a reversed grid front row start for the second race.
”We worked on some changes to the car between the sessions that unfortunately did not work as we hoped for. We are going to analyse this and continue the work for the races tomorrow,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Prince Carl Philip had a tough weekend with ninth position in the second race as best result.
”I am not happy with the weekend. We moved in the right direction with the setup of the car, but we never really got where we wanted. I am looking forward to the next race in Falkenberg where I scored my maiden win last year,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Is CP serious about racing? He only won once and the rest of his finishes have been towards the bottom 10. Why would the team keep him on, besides having the publicity that a prince is on the team?

He seems as serious about it as designing. Unfortunately interest/passion doesn't always equal skill. Though he does have some talent for design, he likely has gone much further in both fields because of who he is. The press he receives likely helps his race team get sponsorships and helps him maintain a place on the team. Press is a good thing in such a sport.

Yes, Carl Philip is serious with his racing and he loves that. And STCC loves to have him racing there. It brings more media to the races, I don't know if they get more sponsors because of Carl Philip. But the organizer of STCC said that Carl Philip's absence at the first races this year didn't have any impact at the number of audience.

About yesterday's races, Carl Philip was really slow. At the first race his best lap time was 2,8 second slower than his teammate Dahlgren and 2,3 slower than is teammate Göransson. He was also 1,6 second slower than the only female driver Emma Kimiläinen.
At the second race Carl Philip started as 2nd. Already at the first lap he had dropped into 5th. Then he got a contact with other car, was sliding and dropped into 10th and was 9th at the results. Because of the contact his car probably got some damage, he was even slower than at the first race.

When compared to his designing, there Carl Philip has a skilled partner Oscar Kylberg. But racing he must do alone.

To say the truth, he doesn't seem particularly talented neither in designing nor in the car racing.
He has been accused, more than one time, of having plagiarized some of his design projects. The collaboration with Oscar Kylberg seems like a way to try to keep him away from the embarassing experiences in which he has put himself when he worked alone.
As for his racing "career", it's clear that he loves it very much but sadly the results are very disappointing, to say the least. Plus he isn't a kid anymore. It would be a smart move to stop with it or maybe looking for a new role like team manager or something like that.

I wonder how long he can continue with racing considering his results. I think if Carl Philip were a member of the British Royal family the newspapers would have a field day with him like they do with Prince Andrew and his golf.

I think everyone should follow their passion even when not everyone approve.

I love his designs - very modern and not for everyone. He & his partner have won couple of awards - i am sure that's more than a lot of people.

Accusations are just rumors and it's unfair to continue to judge him for that.

Obviously Carl Philip has more responsibilities compared to other racers - I will not expect him to be #1.

It's so hard to enjoy this forum because of so much negativity.

Unfortunately they were not just rumors. In 2013 a designer, Erik Eriksson said that it wasn't the prince the real author of a design object, I think it was a firescreen, for which CP claimed credit at a press conference. Eventually he had to remove his name as the designer and put that of the actual author, Erik Eriksson. It was really an embarassing experince for him.

Personally I agree with what other posters have said, he got where he is now thanks to his surname and not thanks to his talent or commitment.
Of course if he wants to continue on this path he is more than free to do so. The collaboration with Kylberg is a smart idea. From the moment CP has started to work with him things are much improved, he seems more serious and committed and has been able to avoid the kind of akward situation he experienced in the past.

The Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) hits halftime at Falkenberg, the fastest circuit in Sweden with an average speed of over 150 km/h, this weekend.
Prince Carl Philip heads to Falkenberg with fond memories, having secured his maiden STCC victory in the second race there last year.
”Falkenberg is one of my favourite tracks and I am really proud over my win here last year. We are slowly moving forward after missing the first race weekend of the year and I hope to claim my best results of 2016 this weekend,” said Prince Carl Philip.
The STCC weekend at Falkenberg starts on Saturday with testing and qualifying, followed by two races on Sunday.

Prince Carl Philip secured his best qualifying result of 2016 in Q2, claiming sixth position, just 24 thousands of a seconds from fifth.
”I have mixed feelings from the day. I am disappointed by the off in Q2 but I am really pleased with sixth in Q1. The feeling I have in the car is the best so far this year and I hope we can continue that in the races tomorrow,” said Prince Carl Philip.
There is more drama expected for the two races tomorrow as rain is forecasted all day. The track has so far only been dry today, meaning a big challenge for the team to get the settings right for tomorrow.

SVT interviewed Carl Philip in Falkenberg, here's part of what he said.
The reporter said that at these races Carl Philip showed some fighting spirit. Carl Philip says that in Anderstorp he had difficulties to find right set up to the car. Here in Falkenberg he had found the set up and feeling with the car, felt secure with the set up and tires. Carl Philip says that he races like anyone else, he doesn't think that he is a prince and drive more careful because of that. He wants to get better and better, be as good as he can. He has two very good teammates, he can compare his data with theirs. The reporter asks, what the royal family thinks about that he races with 230 km speed before he breaks down to the first curve? Carl Philip says that in the family are mixed feelings, there are those who think it is great and fun and who would take his place, then there are those who are a little worried, his mother of course. But they see how much he likes to race and how he thrives with it. The prince is the Duke of Värmland, with the right conditions, would he be willing to race in European Championships Rallycross in Höljes next year? Carl Philip says that he doesn't know what will happen next year, but it would certainly be fun to try anyway. He has talked with other STCC-drivers who have raced in rallycross and they have said that it is great. Carl Philip says that racing is like an oasis for him, it feels that he is like all the others.
