The heir to the Dutch throne, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, and his wife Princess Maxima are expecting their first child, the royal palace announced on Wednesday.
Argentina-born Maxima, 32, and the crown prince, who wed last February, will welcome the new arrival in January, 2004, according to the royal spokesperson.
The eldest son of Queen Beatrix and the late Prince Claus met the woman who would become his bride in 1999 at a party in Seville, Spain. The two wed three years later in a ceremony watched live by millions around the world.
The three-day wedding celebrations were attended by a virtual who’s who of international royalty and statesmen, including the Prince of Wales, former South African President Nelson Mandela and royals from Monaco, Sweden, Norway, Spain and Japan.
