Alfred the Great (c. 849 – 26 October 899) was King of the West Saxons from 871 to 886, and King of the Anglo-Saxons from 886 until his death in 899. He was the youngest son of King Æthelwulf and his first wife Osburh, who both died when Alfred was young. Three of Alfred's brothers, Æthelbald, Æthelberht and Æthelred, reigned in turn before him.

Alfred and his family were all buried before the high altar at Hyde Abbey .
The tombs survived until 1538 when the abbey was plundered during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
The crypt below containing the sarcophagus below remained intact and survived,that was until 1788 when the site was cleared to build a new jail.
The unsupervised workmen discovered the vault and broke into it and smashed open the stone sarcophagus and plundered them of all valuables.
The remains of Alfred and his family were dumped .
Such a pity that Alfred and his family's tombs were not moved to Winchester Cathedral during the Reformation!
