Royals Visiting The Pope

According to her autobiography by James Pope-Hennessy, Queen Mary of the United Kingdom wore white when she and her husband, King George V visited Pope Pius XI in the Vatican in May 1923.
"Queen Mary, who would never wear black if she could avoid it, had chosen to be dressed entirely in white, with a white lace veil upon her head. She was wearing ropes of pearls and round her throat was a pearl choker."

Wasn’t this the time Madeleine (originally?) refused to wear tights? ;)
(How many times did she meet the Pope as a child?)

They were in Rome for Marie José's wedding to Umberto of Italy on 8 January 1930.
What happened to the Stockholm tiara that then Princess Astrid is wearing in the picture?
