Topic on the Princes of Asturias (those who were kings and those who were not).

Princess or Prince of Asturias (Spanish: Princesa/Príncipe de Asturias) is the main substantive title used by the heir apparent or heir presumptive to the throne of Spain. According to the Spanish Constitution of 1978:

Article 57 [...] 2. The heir apparent or presumptive, from birth or event that makes him such, will have the dignity of Prince of Asturias and other titles traditionally linked to the successor of the Crown of Spain.

It is wrong to say that Felipe became Prince of Asturias in 1977. He became a Prince in 1975, which one can observe from old reports. In another thread you posted a magazine cover from 1976 where he is styled Prince. :flowers:

The writer of the Wikipedia article clearly confused the year of his inauguration as Prince of Asturias with the year he succeeded to the title.

If he had remained an Infante until his inauguration, as Wikipedia is claiming, it would have been a major breach with Spanish tradition. There is an unbroken tradition that the eldest sons of the Spanish kings are known as Prince, regardless of whether or not they have been inaugurated as Princes of Asturias, of Gerona, and so forth.

If I understand it correctly,

  • Prince of Asturias was originally the titlle held by the heir to the Crown of Castile.
  • Prince of Girona was originally the title held by the heir to the Crown of Aragon.
  • Prince of Viana was the title of the heir of the Kingdom of Navarre.
As far as I understand it too, there is not a clear point in history (like the Acts of Union in England, Scotland and Ireland for example) when the aformentioned Crowns merged to form a unitary Spanish Crown, but most historians place it in the beginning of the Bourbon monarchy between 1707 and 1716.

In any case, it is logical that the heir to the Spanish Crown, being the successor to all of the jurisdictions above, should hold all three titles.

The Prince or Princess of Asturias is also Duke/Duchess of Montblanc, Count/Countess of Cervera, and Lord/Lady of Balaguer.

Juan, Prince of Asturias and Girona (30 June 1478 – 4 October 1497), was the only son of King Fernando II of Aragon and Queen Isabel I of Castile, and heir-apparent to both their thrones for nearly his entire life.

John's death was followed closely by that of his sister Isabel in 1498. The Spanish kingdoms passed to his younger sister Juana "la loca", her husband Philip the Handsome, and their Habsburg descendants.

Isabel, Princess of Asturias (2 October 1470 – 23 August 1498) was the eldest daughter and heir presumptive of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabel I of Castile. She was Queen of Portugal as the wife of King Manuel I from 30 September 1497 until her death the following year.

In the same year as her second marriage, Isabel became Princess of Asturias and heir presumptive of the Crown of Castile following the sudden death of her only brother, Juan, Prince of Asturias, in September 1497, and the stillbirth of his daughter. Philip of Austria, the husband of Isabella's younger sister Juana, claimed the crown, although Isabel had precedence as the eldest daughter.
