On this day, September 2, 1753 ~ Birth of Maria Guiseppina (Marie Josephine) of Savoy, Countess of Provence, spouse of the future King Louis XVIII of France, at the Royal Palace of Turin, Duchy of Savoy

Sadly Marie Joséphine de Savoie died before the Bourbon restoration in 1814 and having survived the turmoil of the Revolution and Terror!

22nd of September 1531 : Death of Louise de Savoie

Louise de Savoie was mother of King François and acted as Regent of France on several occasions.
Louise who was duchess of Nemours,Angouleme,Touraine and Anjou died at in Grez-sur-Loing and her titles and vast fortune were merged with the crown. .
Her great grandson was Henri IV of France.

At the time of his birth Louis was Dauphin of France as the eldest son of King Henri IV and the first title holder of that in half a century.
The Dauphin was baptized on September 14th, 1606 at Fontainebleau chapel with Pope Paul V and Éléonore de Médicis , Duchess of Mantua chosen as his godparents.

At the time of his birth he was Louis Philippe the son of Louis Philippe II, Duke of Chartres and the grandson of Louis Philippe I, Duke of Orléans.

He was never expected to become king but the French Revolution changed all of that.

21 October 1221 : Death of Alix, Duchess of Brittany

Alix was the daughter of Constance, Duchess of Brittany and Guy of Thouars and ruled as Duchess of Brittany from 1203 until her death.
In January 1213,Alix was married to her cousin Pierre de Dreux who was also a cousin of Louis VIII of France.
Alix died shortly after the birth of her 3rd child,Arthur de Bretagne and was succeeded by her eldest son Jean with her husband Pierre acting as Regent.
Alix was buried at the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Villeneuve near Nante,sadly her tomb was pillaged in 1793 during the Revolution and destroyed.

October 25th, 1415 : Death of Philippe de Bourgogne ,Count of Nevers and Count of Rethel

Philippe was the youngest son of Philippe II (le Hardi), Duke of Burgundy and Marguerite de Flandres.
In 1409 he married Isabelle de Coucy and following her death in 1411 he married secondly,Bonne d'Artois by whom he had 2 sons.
The Count was killed at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and his remains were buried at Notre-Dame d'Élan.

Marie Elisabeth was the only child of Charles IX and Elisabeth of Austria.
The Princess was baptized on the 2nd of February 1573 at Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois,her godparents were Elizabeth I and Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy.

There was great excitement at the birth of the Dauphin,his mother Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche later gave birth to 5 other children but only the Dauphin survived and Queen Marie-Thérèse died in 1683.

The Dauphin was baptized on March 24th, 1662 at Saint-Germain-en-Laye with the Pope as his godfather and his great aunt Henriette Marie of France ,queen mother of England as his godmother.

November 11th,1441 : Birth of Charlotte de Savoie -Future Queen of France.

Charlotte was the daughter of Louis, Duke of Savoy and Anne of Cyprus.
In February 1451 she was married to the future Louis XI of France and was the mother of Charles VIII, Anne de Beaujeau and Jeanne de France.

14th of November 1522 : Death of Anne de France ,Duchess of Bourbon.

Anne was the daughter of Louis XI and Charlotte de Savoie and was born in 1461.Following the death of her father in 1483 she ruled France as Regent for her brother Charles VIII until 1491.
In 1473 she had married Pierre de Beaujeu who later became Duke of Bourbon until his death in 1503.
Anne was known as "Madame la Grande" and was later called to act of Regent of France by her cousin and former brother in Law ,Louis XII during his Italian campaigns.
Anne died at Moulins and is buried beside her husband and daughter Suzanne at the Priory of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Souvigny. The Ducal tombs were destroyed in 1794 but the coffins were rediscovered during 19th century resorations.

16th of November 1528 : Birth of Jeanne d'Albret

Jeanne d'Albret was born at t Saint-Germain-en-Laye the daughter of Henri II of Navarre and Marguerite d'Angoulême.
Jeanne was later the infamous Huguenot Queen of Navarre and thorn in the side of Catherine de Médicis and also the mother of Henri IV of France.

On this day, December 13, 1553 ~ Birth of King Henry IV of France in Pau, Kingdom of Navarre


Henri de Bourbon was baptized by the Cardinal d'Armagnac at the chapel Royal at the chateau de Pau in March 1554.
His godparents were Henri II of France,Henri II of Navarre,Catherine de Médicis and Isabeau d’Albret,Viscountess of Rohan .
Many years later the Cardinal d'Armagnac was at loggerheads with Henri's mother Jeanne d'Albret and publicly remonstrate with the queen of Navarre for having the altars and imges at Notre Dame de Lescar destroyed.

19th of December 1637 - Death of Christine of Lorraine,Dowager Grand Duchess of Tuscany.

Christine of Lorraine was the daughter of of Charles III of Lorraine and Claude de France and as such a granddaughter of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis. Prior to her marriage she was raised by her grandmother Queen Catherine.
Christine died aged 72 and is buried at the San Lorenzo Basilica.

21st of December ,1549 : Death of Marguerite d'Angoulême,Queen of Navarre.

Marguerite was the sister of François Ier and the wife of Henri II of Navarre by who she had only surviving child,Jeanne d'Albret (the mother of Henri IV of France).
The queen died at Odos and is buried at Notre Dame de Lescar.
