On this day, June 1, 1879 ~ Demise of Napoleon Eugene, Prince Imperial of France, in the Anglo-Zulu War

Death of the Prince Imperial by Paul Jamin from 1882.

When recovered his naked body had 18 stab wounds and his chest had been ripped open which was a Zulu practice, because of his bravery they did not mutilate his corpse.
 
1st of June 1146 : Death of Ermengarde d'Anjou, Duchess of Aquitaine and Brittany.

Ermengarde d'Anjou was also Regent of Brittany during the absence of her husband Alain IV while he was on the 1st Crusade from 1096-1101.
Ermengarde was the mother of Conan III of Brittany.

Following her death the duchess was buried beside her husband at l'abbaye Saint-Sauveur de Redon in Brittany.

On this day, June 2, 1805 ~ Demise of Maria Teresa of Savoy, Countess of Artois, wife of future King Charles X of France, in Graz, Austria
 
Sadly Marie-Thérèse de Savoie,Comtesse d'Artois did not live long enough to see the Bourbon Restoration and died in Graz,Austria where she is still buried.

2nd of June 1489 - Birth of Charles de Bourbon ,future Duc de Vendôme and paternal grandfather of Henri IV.


Charles was born Francois de Bourbon, Count of Vendôme and Marie de Luxembourg.He succeeded his father as Count in 1495 and distinguished himself during then Italian campaigns, under King Louis XII .In 1514 the king elevated his countdom to a duchy in recognition of this.
Charles married Françoise d'Alençon on 1513.

The Bourbons at this time were French Princes of the Blood who claimed their line back to St Louis and came after the Valois Princes in the line of sucession.

The Duke of Angoulême was also the last Dauphin of France and had no children by his marriage to Marie-Thérèse Charlotte de France.

Adèle de Champagne was buried at L'abbaye de Pontigny sadly her tomb was destroyed during the French Revolution ,a simple fleur de lys tile now marks the spot .

Louis X - le Hutin was also King of Navarre and Count of Champagne and Brie all of which he inherited from his mother, Jeanne Ier de Navarre who died in April 1305.

At the time of his death he had been king of France for less than 2 years.

The Dauphin died of neglect and his body was buried on June 12th , 1795 at
the Sainte-Marguerite cemetery in Paris .

An extensive search was carried out by his uncle Louis XVIII for his remains in 1817 but nothing was found.

The duke was 60 when he died at Saint Cloud and just a few weeks short of his 71st birthday.
The Funeral of Philippe d'Orléans took place on June 21st his body buried at the vault of the Bourbons at St Denis whilst his heart was placed in a gold urn at St Anne's chapel at the church of Val-de-Grâce.

Both were desecrated in October 1793.

This battle followed the French victory at the siege of Orleans and was Joan of Arc's first offensive battle during the Loire Campaign of 1429.

14th of June 1516 : Death of Jean III,king of Navarre ,Count of Périgord
Viscount of Limoges ,Sire d'Albret .


Jean was a French noble who married Catherine de Foix future queen of Navarre in 1484 and was Count of Périgord,Vscount of Limoges and Sire d'Albret in his own right.
The king died at in Monein in Béarn and was buried at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Lescar .His wife Queen Catherine I of Navarre outlived him by a couple of months.

On this day, June 16, 1644 ~ Birth of Princess Henrietta Anne (Henriette Anne) of England, wife of Philippe, Duke of Orleans
 
The Princess was born at Bedford House in Exeter during the English Civil War and was baptized into the Church of England at Exeter Cathedral.
In June 1646 the Princess along with her mother fled England and settled in France where she was raised as a Roman Catholic.

I'm not 100% certain if the Princess formally converted?

16th of June,1397 : Death of Philippe d'Artois ,Count d'Eu .

Philipe was a French Prince of the Blood and died after the siege of Nicopolis where a large Crusader army was defeated by the Ottomans.He was succeeded by his son Charles d'Artois .

His mother , Judith of Brittany was the daughter of Conan I, Duke of Brittany. Her brother Geoffrey I, Duke of Brittany had married Hawise of Normandy also in in 996 as part of a double union between the duchies.

The future Empress was born Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie and her mother was said to have been of Irish ancestry.

Her 1st husband Alexandre Viscomte de Beauharnais was guillotined in July 1794 during the Terror. Joséphine and her children were imprisoned with some nuns nut were later freed after the execution of Robespierre.

The Princess Napoléon died in exile near Turin her funeral was attended by the king and queen of Italy and various royalty .
Her remains are buried at the Basilica of Superga in Turin.

Louis d'Orléans was the son of Charles, Duke of Orleans and of Valois and Marie de Clèves.
The future king also had 2 sisters

Anne d'Orléans born 1464

Marie was the mother of Germaine de Foix who later became the second wife of
Ferdinand II of Aragon.
 
On this day 27th of June 1794 : The execution of the Count and Countess de Noailles in Paris.

Anne was dame d'honneur to 2 French queens and her husband Philippe was a distinguished French royalist soldier and also a grand nephew of Madame de Maintenon. Both were seen as enemies of the State and were arrested in 1793 and later sentenced to death.
Anne,Philippe his sister in law Cathérine Françoise Charlotte de Cossé-Brissac his daughter in law and granddaughter all went to guillotine during the Reign of Terror.
