June 6 - Sweden's National Day (2010-2024)

Even though Ingelstad is a small town south of Växjö in Småland, it's not the same as Ingelstad district. Ingelstad district is a former district at Österlen in southeast Skåne, and was part of presentday Tommelilla, Simrishamn and Ystad municipailities. Oscar's costume is from the district in Skåne.

Link to SVT's National Day program from Skansen, at 20.00-21.50. The king gives a speech and in the end we see the Armed Forces' traditional Tapto at Logården at the Royal Palace, where the king and queen attend.

Sarah Dawn Finer is just singing "Kärleksvisan", which she performed at Victoria and Daniel's pre-wedding concert.

King Carl Gustaf, queen Silvia, Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén and prime minister Stefan Löfven attended at the Swedish Armed Forces' Tapto performed by the Royal Swedish Army Band, which traditionally ended the evening and SVT's program.

Thanks, JR76 & LadyFinn.

I noticed that Estelle's dress is now adorned just like an adult, even though she hasn't got the headdress or the bag that married women tend to wear.
And she's after all not an adolescent yet, so I just wondered whether there are regional variations of the national dress.

I like the Swedish national (and regional) dress as well as the Norwegian Bunard. It makes things more festive. ?

It's only in DK we are so boring we don't have a national dress.

SVT's program
The King's Song was performed for the King, as always. The king and queen were at the Royal Palace.

After the King's Song the king started his speech:

The King's speech, he said among other things:
Today we are flagging for Sweden - but around our country it has been flagged on half bar more than usual this spring.
It has been a difficult time for many. Thousands have lost close relatives and friends. Others have lost their livelihood. Baptisms, weddings and funerals - important ceremonies in life - have been canceled. And the future may feel uncertain. Not least for those students who are now going to take their first steps into adulthood.
Admirable and heroic efforts have been made by many, in different parts of society. No one mentioned no one forgot. A big thank you to you all! (...)
Dear National Day celebrants.
Today we raise our flag to the top. We celebrate our country - our home on earth. The tradition is maintained.
I think that is an important and good symbol for Sweden: the Sweden that holds together and endures - even when it is difficult.
With that, I wish you and yours a happy ending to this slightly different national day.

Svensk Damtidning about the family at the Palace
Estelle och Oscar busade på slottet under nationaldagen _ Svensk Dam

The royal court at its website about the National Day
Saturday June 6 is Sweden's National Day. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, this year's National Day celebration is limited. However, the royal family has, as usual, paid attention to the day and celebrated Sweden and our flag.
At 08.00 this morning the flags were hoisted at Stenhammar castle, Haga Palace and Villa Solbacken.
At the same time, it was announced which people who HM The King has on this national day decided to be awarded royal medals.
Digital tour of the Royal Palace
Then, at 10 o'clock in the morning, the Crown Princess welcomed a digital tour through the Royal Palace's halls.
Every national day, a very large number of visitors usually go to the Royal Palace, which then keeps extra open and offers different activities. This year, the Palace is closed for visits.
Salute
At noon, the Armed Forces shot salutes from the country's salute stations.
The royal couple to the Royal Palace
In connection with National Day, the King and Queen returned temporarily to Stockholm from Stenhammar castle. From the Royal Palace, the King gave a speech during the evening which was broadcast in Sweden Television's National Day broadcast. The speech was presented without audience present.

What a wonderful idea for sharing the palace with the public on National day when everything is closed up. I really enjoyed the tours and sure others did.

Thanks, LadyFinn. ?

Since this involves the armed forces, let's have a look at the uniforms.

The gala uniforms of the Swedish army are inspired by the Prussian uniforms, hence the use of the pickelhaube as headgear. But the tunic and pants are also relatively tight-fitting in contrast to the French uniforms of the latter half of the 1800s, that were also widely copied.
The insignia are Prussian-inspired as well.
Now this is a band and their uniforms are traditionally intended to be very distinctive and certainly different from ordinary army uniforms. The reason was that military bands were non combatants.
On the battle field they served as stretcher-bearers and wearing a very distinctive uniform no doubt offered considerable protection against enemy fire.
These bandsmen are as far as I can tell from the infantry. White being the color of the infantry.

This colour-bearer and officer standing in the background is very interesting.
https://scontent-hel2-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...=a5dbe5dc72af1a81fe15d55222b5e766&oe=5F01F341
He is a light dragoon.
You can tell by his headgear. The plumage on his helmet is supposed to resemble the mane of a horse - not the tail!
Note the gorget around his neck (the metal-plate) that's German inspired as well. It goes back to around 1600 when full armour was abandoned. The gorget was a part of the throat-protection and was for whatever reason retained as symbol of authority. In a time where there were few uniformed units around and even fewer distinctions of rank the gorget was worn by officers, some NCO and military police - it still is in Germany.
Notice his weapon, it's not a saber but a pallask, a straight heavy single-edged sword.
The color of the cavalry is yellow, and interestingly (at least to me) this trooper is wearing a white piping on his tunic.
I wonder if that is because dragoons were originally mounted infantry, armed with full length muskets, later rifles. I happen to know that the Swedish guards dragoons are armed with Mauser carbines however. Which is consistent with them being light dragoons.
Anyway, dragoons originally fulfilled a role similar to modern airborne troops.
I.e. they could for example move in swiftly to seize and hold an objective, say a bridge. Then dismount and hold for a while until relieved.
Later on, around the Napoleonic age, dragoons became all-round cavalry, able to fulfill most cavalry tasks. Not as well as the more specialized cavalry units like hussars, cuirassiers and lancers but still.

Up to WWI a dragoon squadron would be counted as say 60 swords. Officers, the trumpeter and the standard bearer would not be counted.
In the same way an infantry company would be counted as say 140 rifles. Again, officers and the drummer and fifer would not be counted.

- I simply look looking at 17-1800s uniforms, it's like reading a book. :graduate:

The royal family really spoiled us yesterday, although the National Day was so different because of corona. We got
- videos of hoisting the flags at Stenhammar Castle, Haga Palace and Villa Solbacken
- the Crown Princess family's National Day greeting at the 24 hour live broadcast
- five videos of Victoria guiding us at the Royal Palace
- a new photo of Estelle and Oscar
- greetings from Carl Philip, Sofia and Madeleine with family
- the King's speech at the SVT's National Day program
- the Crown Princess family guiding us at the Royal Palace at SVT's program
- the King and Queen at the traditional Tapto at Logården at the Royal Palace

Princess Madeleine, husband Chris O'Neill and children Leonore, Nicolas and Adrienne are settled in the United States.
- The princess can come to Sweden when permission is granted, at this time there are no such permits, Margareta Thorgren said.
Instead, Madeleine and family get to celebrate Sweden's National Day alone. Through Instagram, the princess has posted a picture of herself and the children. Everyone is dressed in blue except Leonore who is dressed in yellow. In their hands everyone holds their Swedish flag.
Next to the picture, where Chris is missing, Madeleine writes:
"We wish everyone a nice national day!"
That Chris is missing from the picture has a simple explanation, Margareta Thorgren greets:
- Chris takes the picture.
- The family would like to return to Sweden this summer if it is possible to go home, she says further.
Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have also shared a national day greeting. Via Instagram they show how they raised the Swedish flag at Villa Solbacken, and they write:
"Happy National Day from us."
They have also posted a picture where they stand together, freely dressed next to flowering bushes at Djurgården.
For Crown Princess Victoria, National Day has meant guided tours at the Palace, digitally. Her children - Estelle and Oscar - show up at the same time, dressed up for the Swedish flag day: Estelle wearing a traditional Swedish costume and Oscar in a suit and tie.
For the King and Silvia, the National Day meant that they broke the quarantine and went to the Royal Palace, partly to send a greeting to the people, and partly to the King's speech.

I hope we get an "official" video of the Crown Princess family at the Royal Palace, but here is one someone has made to Youtube

Yesterday was also a National Day concert shown online. For many years now, the Royal Opera has had a concert in Haga Park on the National Day (Victoria and Daniel attended the concert last year). The concert was shown yesterday at 15.00.

National Day Concert online
The traditional National Day celebration at Haga park will, due to the current situation, be a little bit different this time. The Royal Swedish Opera will give a digital concert from Gustav III's Pavlion at Hagapark to be experienced from home!
Celebrating June 6 in Haga park is a long-standing tradition and a joint adventure between the Royal Swedish Opera, the Royal Court and the municipality of Solna.
Unfortunately, this year's concert will not be able to take place in the normal way. But, of course, we will celebrate this important day anyway – we simply have to come to you instead!
The Royal Opera preforms – singing, ballet dancing and wonderful summer music – at Gustav III's Pavilion in Haga Park, one of the highlights of Swedish art history.
Participants make court singer Karl-Magnus Fredriksson, members of the Royal Swedish Orchestra and the Royal Swedish Opera's chorus and dancers of the Royal Swedish Ballet.
National Day Concert - Kungliga slotten

During the concert Birgitta Svendén, the General & Artistic Director of the Royal Opera, interviews Staffan Larsson, the governor of the Royal Palaces. Larsson welcomes the people on behalf of the king to the concert and Gustaf III's Pavilion and says that the king is very happy that so many people visit Haga Park.

Big thanks again for all your work :flowers:

I love the last video on the balcony and with the portraits with the kids. I don't understand Swedish but I still enjoyed the video.

I totally missed Cp and Sofia the first time. Nice photo of them.

Must be hard for Madeleine not being able to go home during this. But I am sure she will enjoy her next trip home to Sweden all the more when this is done.

This is what is said at the video when the crown princess family presented the Royal Palace.
Estelle: Beautiful flags, aren't they, mom?
Victoria: Have you seen how many there are?
It is the National Day of Sweden, normally we start the celebration with opening the doors of the "Open Palace" and we receive tens of thousands of visitors, which we are looking forward to, but this year, given the situation, that is not possible. But we hope that you will join us on a special tour of the Palace instead.
Now let's go up to the Palace and look! All the way up! In big stairs we go ... the whole way op!
They arrive to Lovisa Ulrika's Dining Hall
Victoria: Oscar, do you know what this great room is called? It is the Lovisa Ulrikas's Dining Hall. It was this queen's dining room (shows him a painting). She had incredible dinners here! And look what a big dress she's wearing!
Estelle: I think she sat at a small table just under the chandelier and then "la, la, la" eats her meatballs "good meatballs" and then "la, la, la" ("la, la, la" Estelle imitates the tone of a conversation).
Victoria: When it is National Day, grandfather and grandmother usually have a great reception for the "official Sweden" for ...
Oscar: Not now, because there is corona virus ...
Victoria: No, not now because there is corona virus. Exactly. That's why we came here and are showing some rooms.
Oscar: Yes ...
They arrive to the Bernadotte Galleries
Victoria: Look, here is Karl Johan ...
Estelle: Karl Johan
Victoria: Karl XIV Johan, who was married to Désirée, whom we see here. And, yes, this is exciting!
Victoria to Oscar: Yes, you can do that.
Victoria: When Karl Johan was the king, it was a bit of an exceptional time. He was freezing very much and in the Palace it was very cold, and he thought it was very cold to get up from the bed. Because he was from the south of France, and he liked it better when it was warm, so he said "No, you must come here, I will not get up" and he received all his ministers sitting and covered in his bed. He has his nightgown on!
Estelle: That was a good idea!
Victoria: He is sitting there talking and the others have to come to tell him things and to write and tell
Oscar: Mom, how do you know? (Victoria points to the painting and says something to her, but Estelle speaks and her response is not heard)
Estelle: He wasn't a very early riser.
Victoria: No, he wasn't an early riser.
They come to The Cabinet Meeting Room.
Victoria: Here comes the government and the prime minister for the Councils of State. This is where the king, grandfather, receives the government, to listen to the Prime Minister and all his ministers. Grandpa sits in the big chair and the Prime Minister sits here.
Estelle: Who sits here?
Victoria: Grandpa
Estelle: And here?
Victoria: I
They come to the Karl XI's gallery.
Victoria: This is the great gallery, the Karl XI's gallery, where we eat, here Grandpa has his big banquets.
Daniel: Then there is a big table here, and people sitting along this whole room.
Oscar: This whole room is ...
Daniel: All the way there!
Victoria: It is a large and very long table. Up to 170 people can sit there, Estelle. (Estelle tells her it's a lot of people, but she's playing at not stepping on the floor stripes and continues walking around the room)
Daniel: This is how it looks, Oscar. (shows him a photo)
Victoria: Do you see Grandpa there? See if you recognize someone
They come to the White Sea Hall, and Victoria goes up, Daniel and the children stay playing.
Daniel: You too Oscar!
Victoria: (from above) Hello! Now we are at the White Sea Hall, which is wonderfully beautiful. A wonderful room that was initially divided into two ...
Oscar: Hello mom
Victoria: The back part was formerly a dining room, and now it is a single large banquet hall
Oscar: Hello mom
Victoria: Hello my darling. There where you are standing, Oscar, and where Estelle is standing, there Daniel and I danced our wedding waltz (when Estelle runs to dance with her father) almost exactly ten years ago, on June 19, 2010, Daniel and I danced our wedding waltz, right down here.
Estelle: Thank you for joining us here at the Palace. We wish you a lovely National Day!
Daniel: Have a good day!
Estelle: Have a good day! Hey!

Firande av nationaldagen 2021 - Sveriges Kungahus

Svensk Damtidning talked with Margareta Thorgren about the National Day's program.
Victoria takes over the king's symbolic task of handing out the standard flags at Skansen. Another step on the Crown Princess' path to one day take over the throne?
Margareta Thorgren said that it should not be interpreted like that. It is an exceptional year, just like last year. The king gives a speech from Logården, in the same way as he did last year. He has asked Victoria to be his extended arm and hand out the standard flags at Skansen in his place. Last year the county governors handed out the standard flags. The king was anxious to find a solution before this year's celebration, he thinks that it is a nice and symbolic way to honor the commitment and the great importance that Swedish associations and organizations have in society. Thorgren said also that the king's speech will again this year focus entirely on the pandemic. They needed to make the decision about the National Day quite early, and since it was still uncertain then what the restrictions would look like, the king decided on this division.

"Today is Sweden's National Day. Then we usually open the gates of the Palace every year for a traditional celebration with many visitors. But, like last year, we have to deal with the current situation.
We still do what we can to find new ways to make our cultural heritage accessible. And today I have the great pleasure of opening a new exhibition here at the Royal Palace. An exhibition that, in fact, is close to my heart personally.
My grandmother, Crown Princess Margareta - within the family called Daisy - was a very talented person with strong luminosity. She had a genuine interest and commitment in a variety of areas: arts, sports, social work and horticulture.
The Crown Princess was also a loving mother, with in those times a modern view of children. She once wrote:
"Children and flowers have an equal need for sunshine and love.""

Live broadcast, Victoria and Daniel are at Skansen and Victoria delivers the standard flags. The event isn't at the Solliden Scene, where the big celebration is organized normally, it is in another place at Skansen. The king and queen are at the Royal Palace and the king gives a speech at Logården.

The King's speech at Logården
Victoria at the flag ceremony. Because of the covid19, the standard flags weren't taken from hand to hand.
The Tapto at Logården is always so great to watch and listen.
The Master of Ceremonies Odd Zschiedrich took the king and queen, Victoria and Daniel to Logården, where they listened the Tapto together with the Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén and his wife Helena and Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and his wife Ulla.

King Carl Gustaf's speech, he said in the end of it
"Now we are many who look forward to the bright Swedish summer and to soon being able to meet as usual again. We long to be together - in workplaces and in association life, in the streets and squares and in various places of worship.
And when it happens, when we leave our isolated bubbles, then I hope we do it
with gratitude for the sacrifices made
with renewed forces
and with a firm belief in Sweden's future!!

So wonderful that princess Christina was also included in the tour and she seemed to have been explaining things quite animated ?
