The board of the King Carl XVI Gustaf 50th Anniversary Fund for Science, Technology and the Environment decided at its meeting on December 16 with HM The King as chairman to appoint Professor Scott Edwards as the twenty-fifth holder of King Carl XVI Gustaf's professorship in environmental science for 2020/21.
Professor Edwards is a professor at the Department of Organism and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, USA and curator at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard.
Professor Edwards is a leading evolutionary biologist whose research is focused on understanding the evolution of biodiversity and the underlying processes. His work is of great importance both for the global variation of biodiversity and for understanding how this is affected by contemporary global environmental changes. Interesting is the potential for new knowledge about pathogenic organisms as well as the evolution of immune systems in different animal species and what this is likely to mean for biodiversity in a changing world.
Host of Professor Edwards is the Department of Biology and Environmental Science, University of Gothenburg. The stay is also planned with researchers at Lund University and Uppsala University.

With her style and elegance who would imagine a number defining her. There are women half her age that envy the genetic lottery that produced a beautiful young Queen who now only wiser.

On Monday, Queen Silvia turns 76. The whole of Sweden flags - and the royal family loads with surprises for a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
- The king and the queen start Christmas on the queen's birthday and they gather both the family and their relatives at home at Drottningholm Palace, says Margareta Thorgren.
- It will be both the king's and the queen's families.
Can you say which ones?
- This is a time for recovery and rest and they need to have this in private. But just like in all families, you try to meet families on both sides. Both on the Queen's side and on the children's side. The king has his siblings and the queen has her siblings.
The King's surprise for Silvia
However, this is a family that keeps the traditions and they look the same - every year.
On the Queen's birthday, the royal couple will attend Drottningholm Palace Theater's concert in the early evening and the birthday dinner will be a late supper. This is also the highlight of the birthday celebration, as the king always arranges a surprise dinner - with dress code tuxedo - for his dear wife. The king is the evening's general manager and he chooses a new place for dinner every year. From the beauty salons to the porcelain kitchen.

King Carl Gustaf and queen Silvia gave an interview to Svenska Dagbladet SvD on their state visit in India, it was published only yesterday. It is a paywall article.
He commends Greta Thunberg, drives an electric car - and worries about the climate crisis. But King Carl Gustaf hopes the world will find a solution. “It has to go. There is no alternative", says the king in an exclusive interview with SvD.

Expressen quotes the interview king Carl Gustaf and queen Silvia gave to Svenska Dagbladet.

The Queen: Estelle refuses to eat fish that "eats plastic"
In an interview with Svenska Dagbladet, the Swedish royal couple talks about the family's climate anxiety.
Princess Estelle has refused to eat fish, says Queen Silvia.
Svenska Dagbladet interviewed the royal couple during an official visit to India, where King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, among others, spent a day picking rubbish on the Versova beach in Bombay.
The interview was about the royal family's own view of the current climate threat. Queen Silvia told us that even Crown Princess Victoria's daughter Estelle, 7, thinks about it, writes SvD.
- We had fish for lunch but she didn't eat. So I asked - don't you like the fish? Don't want to eat? And then she says: no, because it eats plastic, the queen says, referring to Estelle. A small child hears something and so it has that consequence. She understands that the small particles are dangerous.
The King and Queen make many flying trips in their office as well as in private. SvD's reporter asked how the king and queen view their flights from a climate perspective and received the reply from the king that for longer journeys the flight is inevitable.
He added that anyone who wants to fly should think about the purpose and goals of their trip. Maybe you can consider alternative means of transport, says the king.
- I've been driving an electric car myself for years. Trains are also a good vehicle for travel in our country.
A new year and decade stands at the door. SvD's reporter asks the royal couple what they have hopes for next year. The king replies that he feels a concern as "different conflict cures lie and pervade everywhere".
- I think it's been a miser's misery right now. Both at home, with all the crime going on, and abroad it is not much better. You would like a year when the world can rest out to gather strength, focus on the future and try to cope with this climate problem, he says.
The queen fills in that she has hopes for 2020, but that she feels great concern.

Statement from H.M. The King because of the plane crash in Tehran
Due to the plane crash in Tehran, Iran, H.M. The King gives following statement.
“Today's plane crash in Tehran has claimed many lives. Among the casualties there were a number of Swedes. My and my family's thoughts go to those who were killed, their families and their relatives at this moment."

After the Christmas holiday king Carl Gustaf had work events on 12th and 16th January, queen Silvia only on 16th January. And now they have a break according to the calender, both have their next work events on 4th February.

The King's Rally on Öland has been a tradition since 1997.
The initiative was taken the year before, when the King turned 50. The automobile fan and rallymaster Boo Brasta took the initiative to collect donations for a car for the King - a Volvo PV 60 from 1946, the same "vintage" as King Carl XVI Gustaf.
A rally competition was also organized - and since then a rally has been regularly held, usually in Öland. Between 1997 and 2002 a rally was held every year, but the last 18 years have been every other year.
But 2020 will be an exception. According to the organizers, the royal couple's schedule is so hectic that they will not have time to take part in The King's Rally.
“For the coming year, the royal couple has a very full calendar. HM The King simply does not get the calendar together this year for all the desired events. Therefore, in consultation with HM The King, we have decided that we will be over this year, and are investing in the next Swedish King's Rally being held on Öland in August 2021”, the organizers write via Facebook.
Exactly what is on the royal couple's agenda in August is not known. The public calendar on the royal house's website is empty that month. And Margareta Thorgren has not returned with answers to Svensk Damtidning's question about the reason for the cancellation.
Not the first time
This is not the first time the King's Rally has been canceled because the King has no time.
In 2008, the event was canceled with a couple of months notice. “Changes” in the King's calendar were behind the decision that year, according to Ölandsbladet.

An eyewitness told to Svensk Damtidning, that king Carl Gustaf and queen Silvia were spending last week a long weekend on a skiing trip in Klosters.

On the spot, the royal couple met some close friends who were enjoying themselves on the slopes. The king went skiing with the financial billionaire, baron as well as the good friend Per Taube in the Madrisa ski resort.
- The king was skiing really well, says an eyewitness.
In addition to skiing, the royal couple enjoyed good food and drinks.
Last Sunday, the royal couple was seen having lunch with Per Taube, artist Marianne Bergengren and bodyguards at the charming hotel Chesa Grischuna's restaurant.
Marianne is a widow of the king's good friend, financier Tore Bergengren and for a long time also close friend with the queen.
Marianne has lived in Klosters since the 1970s. Per Taube owns a floor in the resort.
- They laughed and looked to have a nice time, says an informant to Svensk Damtidning.
This is not the first time the King and Queen visit Klosters, they have been here on many decades and enjoy being able to go and shop themselves in the local Coop store, or just stroll around the picturesque and calm ski resort.
Svensk Damtidning has contacted Margareta Thorgen for a comment.

Svensk Damtidning tells that king Carl Gustaf and queen Silvia visited privately Antikmässan (the top Nordic Antiques Fair) in Älvsjö last Friday.

This weekend, the Antique Fair took place in Älvsjö outside Stockholm. A fair that the King and Queen have visited on several occasions. And the fair got a royal visit even this year.
On Friday, the king and queen appeared, in the middle of the crowd. And thus surprised the other visitors. The eyewitnesses say that the royal couple had a nice afternoon and that they looked interested in the objects of the various showcases. It would not surprise us if they struck at something beautiful rarity. They certainly have many rooms to decorate at home at Drottningholm.

It all started with a group of police cadets training in how to check cars and drivers - a routine traffic check. And the order was that all cars were to be stopped.
So a cadet stepped out on the street and signaled for the Regent Couple's car to pull in.
The car slowed almost to a halt, followed by the escorting car from Säpo., when one of the police officers in charge of the students pulled the cadet back to the sidewalk and gestured for the royal car to continue.

It's worth pointing out that not only does the Swedish monarch have Sovereign immunity and can't be prosecuted for any crime but also that this also cover the suspicion of a crime. Therefore it would be against the constitution to even ask him to blow in a breathalyser. This immunity doesn't cover civil cases and, according to journalist Jenny Alexandersson, crimes against humanity.

:previous: Well, there are people whose driving must be considered a crime against humanity. ?

The king's elephant has given birth to a calf at Kolmården
On the night of March 17, an Asian elephant calf was born at Kolmården Zoo. Birth is the second successful birth of an Asian elephant ever in Sweden. The mother of the calf is King Carl XVI Gustaf's elephant Bua and father is Danish Queen Margrethe's elephant Tonsak, both gifts from the King of Thailand to the respective royal houses. Both the Swedish and Danish courts as well as the Thai embassy have been informed of the descent.
The Asian elephant is severely endangered and Kolmården's elephants are part of an international conservation program to save the species.
- The newborn calf is an important part of Kolmården's mission to preserve the Asian elephant for the future. It is important that we keep genetically healthy and prosperous elephants in Europe's zoos. They act as a back-up for their relatives in the wild that are threatened by human propagation in Southeast Asia, says Filip Johansson, Head of Animal Care at Kolmården.
The birth went well and Bua has been taking good care of the calf from the start.
Just like for all newborns, the first time is extra critical and therefore the calf, which is a bull calf, is kept under the supervision of both animal keepers and the zoo's veterinarians.
Kolmården was in contact with the Court during Thursday. The king writes in a greeting to the zoo that he, as a grandfather, in a double sense, will be both glad and happy about the fun event in these strained days and that His Majesty and the family look forward to visiting the little bull calf as soon as possible.

Svensk Damtidning's article about the king on the latest issue

Carl XVI Gustaf King of the People
As Sweden's head of state King Carl Gustaf's role is ceremonial and representative, he has no political power, but he still plays an extremely important role for the people. Like when the winds of disaster draw across the country. Then he is there for us, strong and calming in the crisis.

Dagens Nyheter DN has a large exclusive interview of king Carl Gustaf today. Reporter Karin Eriksson and photographer Paul Hansen have been at the Royal Palace and the king at Stenhammar Castle.

King Carl XVI Gustaf: "We must live differently"
It is no ordinary day in the court's meeting room at the Royal Palace. Here, the management group at the court is usually gathered, and here the royal couple and the crown princess couple hold various so-called audiences on social issues with leaders and experts.
Now King Carl Gustaf's chair is empty. Queen Silvia's as well.
The head of state is on a big screen instead.
- Welcome to Stenhammar, he says.
The royal couple has been at Stenhammar castle for a few weeks. Both are healthy, but belong to the risk group in the corona epidemic. Therefore, they follow the advice of the authorities and work from home. They don't meet grandchildren, other than digital.
So the king connects on video link to the Palace to give an interview with DN.
- We have used this technology in recent days and had a number of meetings and it has been very good, he says.
But the spread of the new corona virus is nothing like what he has experienced during his nearly 47 years as head of Sweden.
- It's a global tragedy, a drama without equal. A movable target. It's moving all the time. We don't know how it ends, he says.
No one could believe that this would happen in Sweden.
We are all groping for examples in history that we can compare to - I see the king shaking his head now?
- You talk about Spanish flu and so on. But this is moving so much faster and has a different course. We travel so much. There is a new speed, no one could think that this would happen in Sweden. You go home and are safe in your life and surroundings and then this suddenly pops up, in the midst of us and among friends and acquaintances.
It was at the turn of the year that the king received information and became aware that a new virus had begun to spread in China.
- Then we could see quite scary movies, in SVT. We then felt, at a fairly early stage, that this was something we were not sufficiently familiar with.
On February 12, the royal couple and Crown Princess Victoria met representatives from the Public Health Agency, The National Board of Health and Welfare and The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
- Then I got a good presentation, both of the situation in Sweden and what could come. They didn't really know how it would develop then.
In the beginning of March the court decided to postpone an official dinner. When the king met with representatives of the government at an additional Council of State on March 18, the arrangement was different. Fewer ministers than usual participated. The Crown Princess did not attend, as the head of state and the heir to the throne are kept separate during such acute crises.
The king conveyed a greeting "We are in a position that demands responsibility for oneself and others", the king noted. He returns to that.
- I hope we can get a sobering message that everyone listens to. And then not to listen to me in the first place, but to the experts and authorities. Today in the big media noise that exists, with social media, a lot of information comes. But it is those who have the overall information and overview that can make the best judgment.
Is there anything that the King has particularly seized on in all the images that are now spread in the reporting?
- We have to think about all the authorities and researchers and experts who work for almost 24 hours a day. We see that the healthcare professionals who work with this take risks for their own lives. It must be awful to work under such conditions. To have a physical press and work around the clock, and also this that you yourself can feel bad.
The King notes that it is difficult to say how long the stresses on health care will last.
- If we look at China then maybe, we might see opportunities for a decline in the number of victims. We do not know exactly when it started. But maybe you can count back from October, and count forward and hope, hope.
- Of course, we all want to take care of the people who are affected. For most people, it may be about financial insecurity. But you can lose family members, that is the most tragic what can happen. We all, we have to stick together here.
Sweden goes its own way in managing the spread of infection. What does it say?
- We'll see what comes out of it all. But we hope that the authorities and experts, with their knowledge and experience, will lead us to the best decisions.
The king said at the Council "difficult situations give us an opportunity to develop the best in us people". What's the best thing to come?
- That very talented researchers and experts come together and try to pick up the common strength, with all the knowledge we have in Sweden after all. We are a hugely well-organized country.
Being the head of state, a person that people listen to in the crisis, how does it feel?
- I have a hard time answering that. But I try to take the information that I have got, and repeat it in the best way.
Perhaps the king has an unusually high opportunity to set a good example, when the entire 40's generation is classified as a risk group.
There are people who in many cases feel that they are in the middle of their lives - nice and healthy, with lots of information ahead of them. This also applies to Sweden's head of state, which gives clear information in the DN about the state of health.
- Yes, I'm perfectly fine, says the king. But we all get older sooner or later. Unfortunately, our resistance to colds and other viruses is reduced over the years. You don't think about it, you don't notice it. But it is quite fantastic if you consider that our children are strong. Their resilience is so much more effective.
We have been able to see in the social debate that some have taken bad action by the councils on seeking social distance or isolating themselves. What does the king think about it?
- I don't understand that at all. It may be a little strange when I say it, but there is very much that you can take advantage of to do as you have not before, which may now be done. You can sit down and read a book. You can go in and clean. You can repaint the house. Take advantage of these days when you're home, simply. There is so much to do.
What is it that the king has done during this time?
- I have read books and we have just started project, where we are renovating an old cast iron sofa. It should be painted.
For the head of state, a lot of work also continues with discussions and meetings. However, all social activities such as meetings, study visits and dinners have been deleted or postponed in the future.
- It is clear that my business is normally very outgoing.
Not being able to be present in a crisis like this, how does it feel?
- It is difficult. I haven't been aware of that. Then you have to do this way, through the media, to convey thoughts. You have to call. Using Skype. Keep in touch with relatives.
- Apart from this, to move or walk in the forest, to try to have good health and to strengthen your physique. I think you should. Go out if you have the opportunity, and can move alone.
There are many people who can't escape to a country house, they don't have such opportunities. We see indications that the area is in dire straits in the crisis. What does the king want to say to them?
- Of course, we are aware of that. There are many people who live in cramped homes, in small apartments, and are alone. It is very difficult and it can be monotonous. But there are phones and cell phones. Use them then, more than usual. Keep in touch with each other.
I can see for my own parents that there is a special community in isolation. How's that for the king and the queen?
- Yes, so far it's been pretty good!
The King laughs.
- The queen also has her chores, which she devotes herself to.
How is the contact with the grandchildren?
- The grandchildren are quite small. Then it's not about sharing heavy thoughts on the phone. But we can use Skype.
And also with Princess Madeleine and her family in the US?
- Yes.

The end of the interview

Several kingdoms in Europe have been infected by the corona virus. But the members of the Swedish royal house had not made any trips to risk areas recently, and didn't have to quarantine. Normal social distancing applies.
Perhaps there will be more outward activities in the program this fall, says the King hopefully.
- Now we have a break here in Sörmland. But we will be back.
Perhaps this is exactly why he chooses to point a way out of the isolation for everyone who happened to pass 70. During the distance interview he repeatedly looks at the future.
He defines the Royal House's mission in the long term, when the emergency crisis is over.
- It's always been like trying to stand broad-legged in the middle of life and look ahead, he says.
Not least, the financial consequences of the pandemic are at risk.
- It's a big economic backpack that we have to carry with us. I think we all think that. This is not just the case with Sweden, but we are seeing the gigantic support packages that all countries in the world are now adding. In some strange way, the world always survives. But large infrastructure investments may have to wait a bit.
But perhaps the crisis can also lead to a new way of life.
The king doesn't think that he is alone in taking the impression of all the possibilities of telework.
- We have the new communication technology and our way of working. We get to learn, we get to think about and we get to live in a different way. Anyone who has professions with the opportunity to work from home, maybe you should do more of that in the future? It would be great to do it one day a week. Don't take the car, think about the environment. There may be something good for the future. We should live better.
Does the King believe that the crisis has aroused people's minds about a more sustainable life?
- Yes, I think many people will think after this. You can do without all these trips around the world. There are so many great places in Sweden. You may not need to travel that far each time.
Right now many Swedes are stranded all over the world. What is the king's message to them?
- Of course, it is regrettable that you have been in such a situation that you did not plan for. This may be something that one must consider more in the future. There are always risks when you go.
The authorities also advise against leisure travel within Sweden. It affects the royal couple like so many others. The king and queen do not know what to do at Easter.
- We are considering the situation. We had wanted to go up to the mountains. There are big expanses in and of themselves, but you should not burden the surroundings and the health care and so on, he says.
And do you have family dinners later?
- Yes. But there will be more Easter holidays in the future. It is not that remarkable.
What is the first thing the king wants to do when we are out of the crisis?
- It'll be a lot to grab, then. To visit and thank and show appreciation to all who have done what is required. Everyone who has worked tremendously hard and sacrificed both family and friends and may have taken risks for their lives.

The crisis deepens for the royal family: There is a risk that the king and queen must isolate themselves until Christmas.
One wonders what the King and Queen are thinking right now. By now, they have been isolated on Stenhammar for a month. One assignment after another has had to be cancelled, or had to be turned into video meetings. And it doesn't exactly look bright when they look ahead either.
The couple usually has their full schedule nailed for more than a whole year to come. Before the corona crisis raged over us, they knew exactly what to do most of the fall. But now it seems uncertain if those 70-plus people will be able to work - or meet their children and grandchildren - at all. Or if there will be video meetings for them, right up to Christmas.
The background is the statement recently made by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. In an interview, she noted that Europe's elderly people - yes, everyone belonging to a risk group - may have to stay isolated all year long. She also warned that a vaccine is likely to be ready fefore 2021. Anders Tegnell is slightly more cautious in his assessment, but stresses the importance of anyone over 70 limiting their social contacts and staying home. And notes that the vaccine will be crucial in protecting vulnerable groups.

Unfortunately, this will be a common problem, as a lot of the senior European royals are over 70: QE2, Charles, Camilla, Queen Margarethe, Harald and Sonja, CG and Silvia.

True. I think that most European monarchs are over 70. At least Felipe VI, Albert II of Monaco, Willem-Alexander and Philippe of Belgium are younger.

I guess the heirs are to some degree going to have step up to the top spot for a bit, at least representationally.

"One of the great Swedish writers and dramatists of our time has passed out of time. In his books and plays he has depicted decisive stages in our country's history, but also what it is to be human.
Per Olov Enquist leaves a great void - but his extensive life work will live on, and his stories will continue to touch us."

Digital job meetings, walks with their dog and video calls with children and grandchildren.
For the king and the queen, life is different during corona times, where they are isolated at Stenhammar castle outside Flen.
On April 30, King Carl XVI Gustav celebrated 74 years, a birthday which is usually celebrated with pomp and circumstance. But that was not the case this year. In the current corona crisis, the king and queen are isolated for homework at Stenhammar castle outside Flen, and it was from there that the king was allowed to follow his celebration.
In spite of his absence, the Armed Forces shot a salute from Skeppsholmen at 12 o'clock and a small ceremony was held under the direction of the Royal Guard.
The birthday child was allowed to follow the video link himself - but was still satisfied, says Margareta Thorgren.
- It was a good birthday, the king has also received many digital congratulations from the people.
However, Queen Silvia took the opportunity to give her husband a surprise at Stenhammar. On the courtyard, Flens Världsorkester suddenly appeared and sang for him, at the Queen's initiative.
- The king was very grateful, says Thorgren.
It is a still life that the royal couple now live at Stenhammar castle for some time. Only the royal couple and princess Birgitta live at the castle, with the king's aide-de-camp nearby. All to protect them from the corona virus.
- In principle, there are very few people around the royal couple and that is because of the infection risk, says Thorgren.
At the same time, the work continues as usual, which means many video meetings for the royal couple. They walk with their dog Brandie.
Like many other grandparents, the king and queen cannot meet their grandchildren. Instead, it becomes a regular video call with the family.
- There is new technology, so you can be together even if you are physically not in the same place. This is a period where many people live in the same way, so it is important to follow the authorities' advice so that everything can be normal again, says Margareta Thorgren.

I have never heard of Stenhammar castle before. Has it been used by the RF regularly before? Is it far away from Stockholm? I also wonder why they just didn´t choose Solliden...?

Perhaps because the Castle needs less staff ?
His Sister Princess Brigitta is there also better in Sweden than in Spain for the moment.
Princesses Desiree and Christina are living in Sweden. Princess Margaretha is in the UK ?
