Yes, it would take 6-7 hours by train and 7-8 hours by car. It is the quickest and most practical option. Also considering they will not be travelling alone but will be escorted by a large group of people.

Last week the minister of foreign affairs went with an airplane to Luxembourg, which would be a 4 hour drive normally.

Queen Beatrix wore the Württemberg pearl tiara during her state visit of 2011. The banquet's dress code was also black tie. Princess Máxima wore the diamond bandeau at the time. In 1982 Queen Beatrix wore the Mellerio Ruby tiara. Both tiaras are among the largest ones of the collection. I am glad that the Queen chose to use her most important tiara for a visit to our most important neighbour.

And I am afraid to ask but is the woman in the pink dress Sylvie Meis?

Yep, still rocking! I think (have no TV) she is a workhorse in German TV. IF I remember it right, she came to Germany as the WAG of Rafael van der Vaart the soccer player, who had not much of a career in the Bundesliga - but she took Germany by storm.

I think she is better liked and has had much more succes in Germany. She left the country indeed as a WAG with some small presentation roles on a music channel. It made the headlines in the Netherlands at least, which was perhaps why she was invited - to generate some interest in the visit.

Today it seems that the king was accompanied by Ank Bijleveld, minister of Defence. The Queen was accompanied by the Grand Mistress, Css Bibi van Zuylen van Nijevelt, née Jkvr. den Beer Poortugael.

Day 3 - July 7

On their final day in Germany today, July 7, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid a visit the Technical University to hear about key technologies, including photonics. They visited the Herzberge Landscape Park in the context of environmental education for children and they visited the Humboldt Forum for a preview of the upcoming "Berlin Global" exhibition.

Lucien , could you translate what the King said and why he said this againts Mr De Vries ?

He says:" The message that journalist Peter R. de Vries has been shot, has deeply shocked us. He and his beloved are in our thoughts. Journalist should be able to do their important jobs freely and without threat. We feel connected to those that work for the freedom of press/speech in our nation."

That is the official written statement.

Typical Dutch to have fabulous floral arrangements for the return event.

Press conference at the end of state visit

The queen nicely managed to deflect a question about what type of queen Amalia would be (based on her wish to return the money she'll receive starting in December); she stated that it would take a day to talk about it, so it wasn't appropriate for a state visit. The king followed (with a smile on his face) 'You can rest assured that it's all right'.

The press conference started with another message from king and queen about Peter R. de Vries; and several questions about this event that shocked the Netherlands and journalists in particular. Furthermore, the king told him that he learned German while skiing and when spending time with family but NOT from his father who always spoke Dutch with them. All princesses studied German in high school and it was one of the subjects Amalia did for her final exam (in the Netherlands you do a lot of subject until the end of high school; it is not like A-levels).

Thank you for the translation. The answers regarding their daughter were sensible and diplomatic. Interesting that the king's father never spoke German with him; I wonder if that decision was influenced by the storm over a German marrying into the Dutch royal family. Was there any particular reason that all of the king's daughters studied German?

Yes, the king didn't go into that much but indicated that it wasn't an easy time for either his father or his mother that the future queen decided to marry a German; so he was fully focused on assimilating as quickly as possible into the Dutch society, which included speaking Dutch.

I believe German is obligatory in secondary school at least for a few years. Amalia apparently decided -probably because she knows it does come in handy as the future queen- to keep it until 6th grade. Alexia will most likely quit taking German classes now she is moving to Wales; and we might never know whether Ariane ends up picking German as one of her graduation subjects.

Edit: looked it up for Sorghvliet Gymnasium. German is obligatory for the first 4 years for all students. Other obligatory languages are: Dutch (1-6), Latin (1-3), Greek (2-3) (to graduate you need to continue either Greek or Latin in 4-6), French (1-4), German (1-4), English (1-6).

Note: number indicate in which grades they have to take that subject. so for example English is to be taken all years: grade 1 to grade 6.

And in all between this Amalia did an extra language: Mandarin Chinese. Of course she will not be able to have fluent conversations with Chinese people but the basic wil be there.
