His Majesty the King and Her Majesty Queen Máxima will pay a state visit to the Republic of Austria from Monday 27 to Wednesday 29 June at the invitation of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. Minister Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs accompanies the Royal Couple.
The Netherlands and Austria are partners with excellent political, economic and cultural relations, both bilaterally and within the European Union (EU), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations (UN). The state visit highlights the strong ties between the two countries and boosts relations. The theme of the visit is sustainable mobility, connected society and cultural exchange.
The state visit in Vienna will start on Monday 27 June with a welcome ceremony at the Hofburg. In the afternoon, a wreath is laid for the victims of the Second World War at the Namur Monument in Ostarrichi Park. The Royal Couple will then be given a tour of the memorial commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. Next, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will visit the Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, and the Deputy Speaker of the Austrian Parliament, Doris Bures. In the evening, Federal President Van der Bellen offers the Royal Couple a state banquet at Belvedere Palace. Later this year, this museum will present the exhibition 'Klimt. Inspired by Rodin, Van Gogh, Matisse' present. During the state banquet, King Willem-Alexander and Federal President Van der Bellen give a table speech.
The Royal Couple will start the second day of the state visit together with the Federal President and his wife in the Brotfabrik cultural center. In this former factory, social integration is stimulated through various projects. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will discuss cultural exchange with volunteers and speak with Ukrainian refugees about their stay in Austria. The Royal Couple then visits the Sonnwendviertel, a residential area that focuses on future-proof construction and increasing the quality of life in the neighbourhood. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima then ride back to the city center by tram. Here, during a short city walk, various aspects of Viennese and Austrian culture and the historical ties between the Netherlands and Austria are discussed. For example, the National Library and a traditional coffee house are visited. Afterwards, Chancellor Karl Nehammer will receive the Royal Couple for lunch in the Naturhistorisches Museum. Later that day the reception for the Dutch community in Austria. In the evening, the Royal Couple will offer the Federal President a concert by the Netherlands Chamber Choir as a thank you for the hospitality. That evening, the choir will perform the world premiere of 'Van Gogh in Me' in the Konzerthaus, in which works of art by Vincent van Gogh and Gustav Klimt come to life to music by their contemporaries.
The state visit will conclude in Graz on Wednesday 29 June. The royal couple travels with the Federal President and his wife by train to this second city in Austria. During the trip, talks will take place with the Austrian climate minister, Leonore Gewessler. In the morning the Royal Couple visits the company AVL. During a tour and discussions with employees and partner companies, the sustainability of motorized transport, innovations in e-mobility, autonomous driving, hydrogen applications and battery technology are discussed. After a visit to the mayor of Graz, Elke Kahr, the governor of the state of Styria Hermann Schützenhöfer gives a lunch. Attention is paid to women in the sciences. In the afternoon, the theme of bicycle policy is central: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima attend a presentation about the Radoffensive Graz, a bicycle concept for the city that is based on Dutch expertise.
