The Sapphire Queen: Elizabeth II Becomes First British Monarch To Reign For 65 Years

Today marks yet another milestone in the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom – as of the early hours of February 6, 2017, she has been on the throne for sixty-five years. The Queen is the first monarch in British history to reach this milestone.

There will be no public celebration to mark the occasion, as the Queen will spend the day as she usually does – privately, at Sandringham House. Few begrudge the Queen her desire to spend Accession Day each year out of the public eye, for although it is a special day in terms of the British monarchy, for Her Majesty it is actually the anniversary of the death of her beloved father, George VI.

Buckingham Palace rereleased a portrait taken in 2014 by David Bailey earlier this morning. Queen Elizabeth is shown wearing the sapphire and diamond suite given to her as a wedding gift from her father.
