Prince William Attends Funeral of Former Nanny

Prince William cancelled high-profile engagements in the North East of England to attend the funeral of his childhood nanny, Olga Powell. The Prince also represented his brother, Prince Harry, who was unable to attend as the latter is currently in Afghanistan.

The Duke of Cambridge paid an emotional goodbye to the woman who was by his side for most of his life, from childhood to adult years. He was joined by his two aunts, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes – sisters of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

The loving but strict nanny had a huge impact on the lives of Prince William and Prince Harry as they were growing up. She came into Prince William’s life when he was just six months old and was always there to support and comfort him and his younger brother throughout the difficult times their experienced, especially after the death of their beloved mother in 1997. A loving nanny, she was also known for her no-nonsense attitude and would give them a clip around their ear if they misbehaved.

Even after the Princes grew up, Mrs Powell continued to be part of their lives. She attended Prince Harry’s confirmation at Eton, Prince William’s 21st birthday party, Prince William’s passing out parade from Sandhurst, and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Three years after retiring she was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal.

Mrs Powell was rushed to Princes Alexandra Hospital, Harlow after collapsing near her home on September 25 but sadly died later the same day. More than 100 mourners attended the service to pay tribute to Mrs Powell, who lived in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. Before the funeral, a request was made for family flowers only. All donations were to be made to Prince Harry’s charity, Sentebale – the final loving tribute of Mrs Powell to her former wards.

The Duchess of Cambridge attended the events at the North East of England on her own; charming as always, she fared characteristically well with the solo engagement. Among the highlights of the visit was a spontaneous hug she gave to 10-year-old Terry Campbell; the young man had vowed to get a hug from the Duchess and held his arms out wide for her. Not hesitating for a second, Kate leant forward and embraced the exited schoolboy.
