Charlotte for President! All in Favor?

Charlotte Casiraghi has arrived upon a new stage of her career as a public figure. Yes, that’s what I said: public figure. For Miss Casiraghi became just that when she accepted the role of Gucci’s equestrian muse. In fact, since last year, she has been steadily on her way to becoming a patroness of her favourite sport.

Now she is something more, something highly official, and ever more like her mother! Now she is the Honorary President of Monaco’s five-star international jumping event. Her debut in this special role came alongside the news of her uncle’s engagement to the Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock, whose relationship with the Sovereign gained the public notice when she sat with him at the Opening Ceremonies of the Torino Olympics in 2006.

But no one stole Miss Casiraghi’s thunder at the Port Hercule Arena on Friday night, the 25th of June, 2010. In fact, her uncle approached her on his arrival with a congratulatory kiss. Relatives from the Grimaldi and Casiraghi families, as well as many friends, flocked around her to witness her own brainchild: The Monaco Pro-Am Cup of the Global Champions Tour.

Princess Caroline brought two Dachshund puppies; Charlotte’s uncle Marco and aunt Cecilia Casiraghi, plus several good friends joined the party in the VIP spectator’s tent. Professional and amateur riders paired up, like Noah’s Ark, and competed over jumps of 1m30 and 1m50 height, respectively. Each pair belonged to a team under either corporate or non-profit sponsorship. Charlotte and her Pro Pal, the Australian Olympian Edwina Alexander, jumped under the Gucci flag, of course.

Charlotte scaled the 1m30 course beautifully with her grey gelding, Tintero. Unfortunately, she acquired four faults, which all of Edwina’s speed and perfection on the 1m50 course couldn’t erase. Victory was for Bart Soetaers (BEL) and Lauren Hough (USA). Patricia Koller (SUI) and Alvaro de Miranda (BRA), for team Amade Monaco, had second place. Third place went to Flaminia Straumann (SUI) and Denis Lynch (IRE). The total prize money of 15,000 euros ensured that all 28 participants went home with a slice of the pie. The bottom nine (Charlotte and Edwina were 10th place) all took 500 euros.
