Death of HRH The Duke of Parma 18 August 2010

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
May I ask which decoration the new Duke of Parma is wearing ?

As he is Head of the House Bourbon Parma now I suppose it is the Constantinian Order of which he now is Grandmaster.
A Ducal Order of which his father as Head of the House was Grandmaster before.

:bourbonparma:

Not exactly a,or the, funeral but a Memorial and farewell from Spain as the body will be flown to The Netherlands tomorrow.
Very moving, about 300 persons attended the service.

Duke Carlos Javier and Duchess Annemarie as well as TRH Prince Jaime,Princesses Margarita and Maria Carolina and three sisters
of the late Duke of Parma,Marie Therese,Cecilia and Maria de las Nieves were in attendance.

The wreath in the back with the blue ribbon is from TM King Don Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain.

The late Duke will be flown here today on board the government aircraft KBX by special order of HM Queen Beatrix,(who also picks up the tab..for those who would question..),as a special sign of caring affection between dear old friends. The late Duke, who held the title of Prince here, will lie in state in the Fagel Pavillion in the Noordeinde Palace garden. The general public will not be able to pay their respect, only invited guests will be able to do so.

It is, it looks like there is just a red ball with some kind of feather coming out of the top right.

I think that's a red beret & a Lily on top of the Spanish 'armless' standard.

I'm not sure but I think is the "simbol" of the Carlist party.

It is Paty, the red baret is a Carlist symbol. The "white" is a white lily, another symbol.
The Prince is wearing a simple benedictine habit in his coffin.
He was Knight Grand Cross Honour and Devotion of the Order of Malta
Grand Master of the Constantinian Order, but this shows, again, what a humble man the late Duke was.

The late Prince just arrived at the airport here and is taken to The Hague now.

Lucien , May I tell you again my great admiration for the behavior of The Dutch RF towards the infortunate Duke of Parma , born French Prince Charles-Hughes de Bourbon- Parme, son of Prince Xavier de Bourbon-Parme and Princess Madeleine, Princesse de Bourbon-Buisset.
He married Princess Irene, without the agreement of her parents in Rome, and they divorced after a few years.
His Carlist campaign was alas unsucessful but he remained respectfull for Spain 's King Juan Carlos , another Bourbon.
His children grew up in the Netherlands with the support of the RF.
Altough 2 of his children had sad situations : a boy born without wedding and a wedding which was totally a disaster the Dutch RF alowed that the late Prince came to the Netherlands with honour of this Ducal title. I am impressed.

Requiescat in pace!

Thank you for your kind words dear Maria-Olivia.They did get married with the consent of both her parents, but as a Monarch thus Head of State her mother The Queen was to follow the government in this question and therefore could not attend nor any member of the RF.He,Carlos Hugo, wasn't to give up his rights to the Throne of Spain while Princess Irene was second in line here, had converted to catholicism and wasn't willing to give up Carlos Hugo. So,she married without the consent of the Dutch government and by doing so lost her right to the Throne. On their wedding day, april 29th 1964 in Rome's Santa Maria Maggiore in the Capella Borghese, the dutch RF watched the ceremony on tv,in black and white at that time, there were no colour tv's at the time. And then the electricity failed while they were watching at Warmelo Castle, residence of Princess Armgard,Bernhards mother, and left them all with a black screen.A drama, certainly in those days, and we felt for all involved. Can you imagine.

The marriage lasted 17 years,17 years in which they worked hard to convert the Carlist movement from a ultra-conservative bunch into a realistic and modern political party. But with Franco's choice for Don Juan Carlos and the subsequent success of the latter the Princess later said;"With King Juan Carlos being the excellent Monarch he turned out to be,we had nothing left to fight for, lost all faith in success for what we had been fighting for and disillusion ruled".

Later, son Prince Carlos, now Duke Carlos Javier and Miss Klijnstra had a deal in which Brigitte wished to have a baby from Carlos, but not tyed up in a marriage,it was the mothers choice to have Carlos Junior and live as she does, btw a handsome nice boy it is now.It might maybe not have been the late Duke's favorite moment, but a child is a child and doesn't ask to be born but when it did it was agreed that the baby would not be officially recognised. And that is what happened.Margarita,I am just way too happy for her that she found Tjalling and has her wonderfull family here in Amsterdam.Whatever happened, and whatever crisis occurred with or without the direct doing of a family member, they always have the grace and human kindness to talk their fights/disagreements over and that is that.

The late Duke was a favorite among many family members,it really is a warm, very funny, very intelligent and closeknitted family you know,I just wish I could say that of more families I know of.

The late Duke deserves the respect shown now,HM and all the family think so,and that shows their caring and cordiality towards friends, especially this one.

The coffin with the remains is now lying in state at the Fagel Cupola in the Palace garden,a absolutely beautifull sight, with three large wreaths, the one in front of his coffin from his children and Princess Irene, one of HM Queen Beatrix, her children and grandchildren and one by King Don Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain. It is a moving sight Maria-Olivia,but it goes beyond that,it shows the genuine affection and respect and the high esteem in which the late Duke was held by the Orange Nassau family. And by a great many of us.

What an excellent explanation about the late Duke's life. Thanks a lot. I didn' know the story about their black and white TV on 29th. 1964
By the way which language did he speak with the Orange Nassau ?
French , english or dutch ?
I have another question. Carlos Hugo's father was not Duke of Parma it was his elder brother, when he died without heirs it came over to Xavier's family. Am I right?

I think Xavier did become duke of Parma and Piacenza in 1974 at the death of his nephew Roberto II. His elder brother Sixte died in 1934.

El Matiner: Ante la muerte de Carlos Hugo de Borbón Parma.

Sixte-Henry expresses his saddness for the death of his brother and prays for his soul.
He also says that he's still willing to help his nephews if they want to take in charge the Carlist traditions.

They don't need the help of that creature, they are absolutely capable of handling matters themselves.
No need for false sentiments by that creature. Not your fault.

They spoke french and/or english, but preferably french at first.Spanish with Irene because she studied Spanish at university. He did try on Dutch too tho,but it never was a huge succes, never mind, inspite of that we all hold him in high esteem.

The Duke of Parma how was he related to the Italian Royal family? I missed this fact when reading his obituary.

Which members of the european Royal Families will participate at the funeral of the late Duke of Parma?

Which members of the european Royal Families will participate at the funeral of the late Duke of Parma?

No names are known yet, naming would be pure speculation and there is plenty of that already ofcourse,
so we rather wait till later next week for that.Tonight we saw the children, the sisters and HM The Queen
and Princess Irene side by side ,indeed all members of the Royal Family, walking to the Fagel Cupola to pay
their respect,very moving.

Sad to hear about the death of the duke. My condoleances to the family. He was always very loved by his in-laws, which clearly shows. The portrait that they released to the press and that is placed close to the coffin seems to have been made during Queen Beatrix 70th & Princess Margriet 65th birthay celebrations. It seems to be the same background as the series of portraits of other family members.

Considering that Sixtus once tried to kill his own brother (and sister-in-law), I must say his sadness seems somewhat hypocritical.

I hope that the duke's other child (a son?) will be attending the funeral too. Though I suppose it will be in a somehwhat more discreet seat than the rest of the family.

Imho Sixte Henri's statement is horrible: a few hours after Carlos Hugo's death, he's asking to Carlos Hugo's sons to disown the ideas and ideals of their father (and ideas and ideals they seem to go along with).

ReallY???? I didn't knew nothing at all about that!

My deepesty sympathy to the family, and can someone point us newbies who are not familiar with the late Duke of Parma (other than his relationship with the Dutch royal family). He tried to kill his brother and sister in law?!

I thought the late Duke had already renounced his claims to the thread, but of course, not on behalf of his son. How tacky.

It happened in May 1976, during a meeting of the Carlist Party in Montejurra attended by Carlos Hugo and Irene; that party was founded 5 years before by Carlos Hugo, and was very distant from the traditional Carlism (and from Traditionalist Communion, the historical party supportive of Carlism) due to its socialist ideals (while traditional carlism, of whom Sixte Henri is the self-proclaimed standard bearer, was and is very conservative).
In Montejurra happened gunmen opened the fire on the crowd, and killed two men (who were next to Carlos Hugo and Irene).
The gunmen were far-right supporters; it is believed that the massacre was organized by Sixte Henri in order to kill Carlos Hugo and Irene, because Sixte Henri never approved the turn to left of Carlos Hugo's party and always considered it as a betrayal of the true Carlism.

I already wrote about that extensively two years ago in the thread on the late Duke, and how I never forgave Sixte for planning to kill Carlos Hugo and Irene at the Montejurra. If you look under the "RF's of Italy" and then under "Carlos Hugo,Duke of Parma" that's where I wrote it all, pages 2 and 3.There were more who didn't know when I wrote that.Sixte and sister Francoise, who took the side of Sixte, are quite isolated fascistoide way carlists, every family has a black sheep, this one has two dirtbags instead.

Never mind them, what we see now is a true warm and deeply saddened extended family, genuine to the core.
But please let us not pollute this thread on the death of the Duke with that infantile brother any further. Please?

Please allow me to post a link to a beautifull banner at the GREMB.It shows TRH The Duke and Duchess of Parma
in full regal splendour during the reception for the State Banquet at the State Visit by Irene's parents,Queen Juliana
and Prince Bernhard to France. The couple lived in Paris at the time, hence the invitation in case anyone wonders.
The Duchess is wearing the Bourbon Parma tiara that is now lost, and the necklace of the (Dutch) saphire parure.
Irene always looked breathtakingly stunning and always was thought of as being the most handsome of the four sisters.

And again, all members of the Royal Family and the children and three sisters of the late Duke payed their respects last night.
