British Royal Family Engagements - 2021

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I would like to apologise for the fact that this week's update will be delayed.

I am a casual teaching, having retired from full-time work a couple of years ago. On Friday I went to school for a day's work (I only work at my former school) and left my back-up drive there for another teacher to copy some documents.

However, when I did my last 'copy' of my files from my hard drive to the back up drive I must have gone 'cut' instead of 'copy' as all my royal files aren't on the hard drive. My other back up drive only has them to the end of last year and no 2021 files. I won't therefore be able to finalise this week until after I go to work on Tuesday (luckily I am having another day so close as sometimes I can go a week or more with no days at work ... doesn't worry me as I don't 'need' the money ... it is the meeting up with students and staff I enjoy).

Now *that* is a beautiful example of a life well lived and enjoyed when someone spends their career doing something that they love to continue at their own pleasure in retirement! Some advice I do give to my young grandchildren these days is "make your life one you don't need a vacation from because it's living your passion". You're a prime example of this, Iluvbertie!

Not to worry about the updates either. They'll be on here when you can get to them and we'll enjoy them just as much and they'll be archived with all the rest of the great work you've done chronicling all those years. ?

Weekly Update to 28th May, 2021

Again sorry for the delay but now I am 'back to normal' and have ensured that both back-up drives are 'up to date'.

Weekly Update to 18th June, 2021

A quiet week this week with only 21 engagements. Although we saw a number of the royals as Ascot that isn’t an official engagement. Unusually The Queen’s attendance on Saturday wasn’t recorded in the CC … normally it is recorded that she ‘honoured Ascot with her attendance’ but this year no mention of her attendance.

Those who attended The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral have been removed although I do have the list and will include in the annual summary per person at the end of the year.

I have just been reading the CC for the 22nd June and saw some good news:

For the first time since 30th July last year, other than Prince Philip's funeral, Princess Alexandra has carried out an official engagement. She was even out and about rather than just making a phone call or having a video meeting.

I know there was a report that she had been making phone calls to her charities but, unlike everyone else, they weren't being recorded in the CC for some reason but now an official engagement for one of my favourite royals.

This will, of course, appear in my weekly update (and 22nd June is the busiest day of the year with 20 engagements in a day. Compare that to last week with 21 for the entire week.

St James’s Palace

Princess Alexandra this evening attended a Service to mark the official opening of the new stained glass windows in Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, 21A Soho Square, London W1.

Weekly Update to 25th June, 2021

A busier week this time with the two busiest days of the year so far. The Queen also undertook three engagements at Buckingham Palace and her first in person audience with the Prime Minister since March 2020. It was also Princess Alexandra’s first engagement, other than The Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, since July last year.

With no publicity The Princess Royal made a one day visit to Jersey. She does so much and the national and international media largely ignores her, sadly.

Weekly Update to 4th July, 2021

An interesting week as most royals were out and about. It was lovely to see The Duke of Kent at Wimbledon – life as normal for the royals it seems.

Last week we had Holyrood Week with The Queen, The Duke of Cambridge and The Princess Royal doing engagements in Scotland as did The Earl and Countess of Wessex and The Prince of Wales.

One thing I found interesting is that on the two engagements The Duke of Cambridge carried out with The Queen he was listed as The Duke of Cambridge, EARL of STRATHEARN but when alone he was simply listed as The Duke of Cambridge. I wonder why???

Might this be the first year the Duke of Cambridge leads the total engagement tally?

It might but given how close Anne is to him now and the summer school holidays about to begin I suspect not. It is unusual for the Cambridge's or Wessex's to do a lot of engagements during the summer holidays while Anne stays busy throughout. She has off the odd week here and there while others tend to take off the best part of two months.

William built up his numbers during lock down when, every Thursday, he made 6 - 8 phone calls, each recorded as separate engagements. Edward would contact 6 - 8 related organisations via a video link each week as well but it was recorded as one engagement so presumably it was on video call and not one to each organisation.

Fair point. And whilst Anne and probably Charles may well lead the league table at the end of the year, what the current numbers are clearly setting out is that William has indeed stepped up his game. I hope we see more from Catherine as well.

Catherine, I suspect, will be about where she is on the League Table for a number of years due to the age of the children. She still has a pre-schooler so I suspect we are a good decade away from her doing 250+ per year, unless she becomes Queen in that time.

Fair point. Would quite like to see her get her numbers up to 150-200 over the next year or two.

She'll do that. I would expect her to be close to 150 this year and once overseas tours start again for more than a couple of days I would expect her to make 200. It is the 250+ that will take longer to reach.

Fair point. But a consistent annual number around the 200 mark would be good for this stage of the game. I also think the numbers will increase when evening events, usually receptions and fund raisers return. There can easily be around 20-30 of those that W&C will attend every year.

Receptions are actually more likely to be day events as are fundraisers. Evening events are quite rare. I can't see the Cambridge's doing more evening events until the children have either left school or at boarding school - like the Wessex's who do very few evening events.

Most evening events are dinners, concerts or other artistic performance.

Weekly Update to 11th July, 2021 - Part 1

Another week with many royals out and about, especially with the Euros and Wimbledon. Not everyone was noted in the CC, especially The Duchess of Cambridge’s attendance at the finals of the Euros.

An interesting day for me was the day that The Princess Royal went to the Isle of Man. During the day she officially represented The Queen at the Tynwald Day Ceremony as the ‘Lord of Man’. We all know the many titles that The Prince of Wales holds but sometimes it is interesting to see the extra titles that Her Majesty actually holds – such as Lord of Man.

Weekly Update to 29th August, 2021

Sorry for the delay in the updates. I have been having some personal issues during September that have been exacerbated by lock down … a month when I really wanted to see my family for two major reasons (10th anniversary of my father’s death and then the 50th anniversary of my brother starting his career and both events only 4 days apart and we had had plans for both but covid intervened and so didn’t get to do either).

Will try to catch up to end September/first week October this week.
