King Carl XVI Gustaf's Golden Jubilee Year 2023

Design competition for the Jubilee year 2023
Join in and create the King's Jubilee emblem! Ahead of the 2023 anniversary, the Royal Court states a competition to produce the symbol for the Jubilee year. The competition is aimed at students in graphic design.
On September 15, 2023, the King celebrates 50 years on the throne. He is the longest-serving monarch in Sweden's history. In the same year, we note that it is 500 years since Gustav Vasa was elected king in Strängnäs on June 6, 1523.
The winner will be invited to one of the events organized during the anniversary year.
Competition entries will be submitted digitally during the period March 22 – April 25, 2022
Ten entries are nominated in early May and advance to the finals. The winner will be announced before midsummer.
HRH Prince Carl Philip leads the jury work together with established designers, graphic designers, artists and an expert in heraldry.

Carl XVI Gustaf is the king who has sat longest on the Swedish throne.
Next year he celebrates 50 years as regent with a gala dinner, foreign royal guests, a big party at the Nordic Museum and a cortege through Stockholm.
But the anniversary will be celebrated in more places in Sweden.
- It is a jubilee year for the entire Swedish people and therefore anniversary activities should be carried out throughout the country, says Marshal of the Court Göran Lithell.
The anniversary year kicks off with a big party at the Royal Palace. On January 27, the royal couple invites all of Sweden's governors to a so-called Sweden dinner. (..)

A documentary is been made of the King, the premiere should be 24th February 2023.

Director Karin af Klintberg has been given unique access to Carl XVI Gustaf. Until now, no documentary has been made about a Swedish king who is still alive. But for a year now, Karin af Klintberg has followed the King closely in both official and more relaxed contexts.
The film was presented at SF Studio's press conference in Cannes today. (..)

The Marshall of the Realm Fredrik Wersäll was interviewed at the National Day concert/Tapto broadcast about next year's celebration. Wersäll said that there will be an exhibition of the finest things in the Royal Collections.

Good thing they're having a gala dinner with foreign royal guests. It must be in September, I think.

He wasn't the youngest king to succeed, right? It's just modern circumstances that have had him reigning a record amount of time?

The throne skipped his father (who had died prior to CG's grandfather) which is why the king did become king at a rather young age (27 - not much older than queen Elizabeth). So, it's not really about modern circumstances but about his father dying prematurely. He's still only 76 now.

I know how he got to the throne, but I'm also thinking that perhaps in medieval times someone succeeded at a younger age, but did not reign for fifty years due to war or lack of modern medicine; those kind of modern circumstances.

When you consider the Bernadotte genetics and the fact CG could easily have his own Platinum Jubilee, it's quite something.

Magnus IV became king of Sweden aged 3 in 1319 and reigned for 45 years before he was deposed in 1364. Had he not been deposed he'd been king 10 years longer until his death in 1374.
He was also King of Norway (including Iceland, Greenland, parts of Scotland, Faroe Islands etc...) between 1319-1355 when he abdicated the throne for his son Haakon VI and Lord of Skåne between 1332-1360.

I've found a couple that were about the same age as Carl Gustaf...

Much younger:
Gustavus Adolphus (16)
Karl IX (4)

Had Queen Kristina not abdicated in favour of her cousin. She would have been the longest reigning monarch of Sweden as she became queen when she was only 5 years old and died at the age of 62.

Was he the only one, or did a bunch of people succeed younger than CG, while we're at it?

The Swedish Middle Ages are full of kings that ascended the throne in their teens and even earlier. Some of these went on to have long reigns, but none as long as Magnus and Carl Gustav.

In post-medieval Sweden we also have a few examples of monarchs younger than Carl Gustav:
Erik XIV (1560-1568) 27 yrs
Sigismund (1592-1599) 26 yrs
Gustav II Adolf (1611-1632) 16 yrs
Kristina (1632-1654) 5 yrs
Karl XI (1660-1697) 4 yrs
Karl XII (1697-1718) 14 yrs
Gustav III (1771-1793) 25 yrs
Gustav IV Adolf (1793-1809) 3 yrs
Both Sigismund and Gustav IV Adolf would have ruled for over 40 years had they not been deposed.

About the program on the Jubilee Year at its website.
* Sweden Dinner
In January, the Jubilee Year begins with a Sweden dinner at the Royal Palace.
* County trips
Starting in February and ending in September, TM The King and Queen travel through the whole of Sweden to visit all the cities of residence.
* Celebrating 500 years of Sweden - in Strängnäs and Stockholm
On June 6, 2023, attention is drawn to the fact that on this day it is 500 years since Gustav Vasa was elected king and the country entered a new era that shaped the nation state of Sweden.
The King and Queen start the National Day celebrations in Strängnäs and end the day in Stockholm. The National Day celebration at Skansen in Stockholm will be more extensive this jubilee year. During the evening, HM the King also gives a larger National Day reception for representatives of official Sweden and the diplomatic corps at Nordiska Museet.
* Jubilee weekend
HM The King's 50th anniversary on the throne of Sweden is celebrated on September 15 and 16 in Stockholm. On Friday, September 15, the Te Deum will be held in the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace. During the day, HM the King also oversees a changing of the guard and receives a singer's tribute at the Royal Palace's outer courtyard. The same evening, a larger jubilee dinner is given in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace.
On Saturday 16 September, the King and Queen will travel in cortege through the capital.
* Exhibitions
During the year, the Royal Court arranges exhibitions at the Royal Palace, Vasaborgen Gripsholm and Slottsbacken in connection with the Jubilee Year.

Last year the king turned 75, which was celebrated in a rather low-key way. Partly because of the pandemic, partly because it was decided to push hard in 2023 instead. Next year is a double milestone in the history of the Swedish monarchy.
On the evening of September 15, 2023, half a century has passed since Gustaf VI Adolf died and Crown Prince Carl Gustaf succeeded his grandfather on the throne as Carl XVI Gustaf. (..)

A sumptuous gala dinner, visits throughout Sweden and several royal exhibitions.
When the king celebrates 50 years on the throne, the whole country gets to join in the celebration.
- It will be something truly unique, says Marshall of the Court Göran Lithell.

Trailer of Karin af Klintberg's documentary film "Kungen" (The King), which is set to premiere in Swedish cinemas in February 2023.

For two years, film director Karin af Klintberg courted the court's information department. In the end, she was the first journalist ever to receive a yes. A unique opportunity to closely follow King Carl XVI Gustaf in his life and work.
The recordings began last spring and since then there have been several meetings. Sometimes at a distance, under more formal forms, such as at inaugurations and state visits. Sometimes one-on-one, at the Royal Palace or in the park at Solliden, at the king's summer residence on Öland. The conversations are about everything from childhood to the highs and lows of royal life.
It is the first time in history that a documentary film is being filmed about and with a king while he is still alive. The king's grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf and great-grandfather Gustaf V did not give interviews.

Judging on no subtitles... this actually looks like it could be interesting and good for CG's image. Guess it will take till February to see.
