Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, The President of the Republic of Portugal, will make a State Visit to the Kingdom of Belgium between the 16th and 20th of October, at the invitation of Their Majesties the Kings of the Belgians, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. The program will include trips to the three regions of the country: Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels.

This could be Elisabeth's tiara debut AND an opportunity to see if Gabriël and Emmanuel have received the Order of Leopold.

I don't think Elisabeth will take part in State visits until she's completed her education. The State Visit will take place during the school/academic week, so I don't think any of the Royal couple's children will be present

Elisabeth will not attend state visits now when she is still studing at Oxford.
She did attend some royal events .

Along with Queen Mathilde we might see her sister in law,Princess Astrid Archduchess of Austria-Este.
I doubt we will see Princess Claire.

Elisabeth already attended 2 tiara events (in Norway and in Jordan), but it is true that she has not worn a tiara in Belgium yet.

Sadly, we won't see Elisabeth while she studying at university. And the brothers, I don't think if they were awarded with the Order of Leopold.

Any info about the State Visit?

It will officially start tomorrow, October 17. On the President's website it says it's a state visit from October 17 to October 19, while at the website of the Belgian Royal family it still says October 16 to 19:

Very sloppy wording on the Portuguese President's website. While Philippe is the "King of the Belgians", the Kingdom itself is called "Kingdom of Belgium" rather than "Kingdom of the Belgians" as used in the state visit announcement.

Don't know if the State Visit will go ahead as previously planned as there has been a terrorist attack in Brussels tonight.

Just thought that too and watching that on the news!

The UEFA EURO 2024 Qualifier match Belgium-Sweden was interrupted. So far was 1-1

The President of the Portuguese Republic, who is in Brussels for a state visit to Belgium, considered it premature to link the shooting attack that took place in this city today to the situation in the Middle East.

Regarding the program for his state visit to Belgium, which will take place between Tuesday and Thursday, he said: "We will follow, in principle, the entire program that was planned."

The President of the Republic said that he had left a private dinner hosted by the Belgian monarchs, Philippe and Mathilde, when he learned that "there was a situation that coincided with the game taking place in Brussels, between Belgium and Sweden, in which there was the violent death of two Swedes".

Given that the shooter left a video in Facebook affirming his affiliation to ISIS, the shooting is very much linked to the situation in the Middle East..and the rest of Europe.

The security measures will be extreme, but they have to go on with the State Visit.

With the shooter still at large, I am not sure if it is prudent to hold an open-air welcome ceremony.

I don't think the city is in lockdown. The palace swuare should be easy to safeguard, though the police may indeed best occupied with other things. How terribly sad.

The state visit has started today, October 17.

Following yesterday's attacks the programme has been adapted. The ceremonies at Place du Palais and at the Unknown Soldier have been cancelled:

And here’s a video of the banquet:

The Killer was found and shot he died this morning at 9. 30. The Police is in his home for the moment.
Among the rules the match Sweden Belgium should have been played this evening but the swedish players are back home.
The 10 IKEA shops are under high protection. No lockdown !
A preparation of a State Visit takes a lot of times , and the President is right not to cancel.
We Belgians are so sad. It happens in Brussels , our main City.

Coverage from the BBC here .

Hopefully the rest of the state visit will be able to go on as planned now. Canceling the outdoor welcome ceremony and the visit to the Unknown Soldier memorial was the right thing to do given the circumstances.

Does anybody know why Mathilde is not wearing a tiara?
She probably felt it wouldn't be appropriate, just one day after the terrorist attack in Brussels. The program of the first day of the State Visit was adapted and scaled down because of that

The President of Portugal at yesterday's state banquet highlighted the genealogical connections between King Philippe and the Portuguese monarchs.
On the paternal side, he's a descendant of King Joao VI abd King Miguel I (Miguel's daughter Maria José was Queen Elisabeth's mother), while on the maternal side he's a descendant of King Dinis and Queen Saint Isabel. Also Queen Mathilde is connected to the first dynasty of Portugal through various ancestors

I would be surprised if King Philippe himself knew he is a descendant of King Dinis, a Portuguese monarch who died in 1325.

He is probably aware, however, of his descent from Miguel I via his great-grandmother, Queen Elisabeth.
